    Looking for trip insurance recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations for a source for reliable and inexpensive trip insurance. Normally I have it purchased by now, but since I just finished paying for the hotel for the last part of my stay, I haven't had the money for it until now. I did buy trip insurance when I first bought my plane ticket via American Airlines, but that was only $40 bucks because I had just purchased the plane ticket going one way at the time, and when I called to update the info and add to it, they told me it would be an additional $140, and I'm not a total cheapskate, but I remember last time I bought my trip insurance, I went for 26 days and it was a total of like $89 bucks but I cannot for the life of me remember what service I went through when I did that, so if anyone can recommend a good one for me to use that won't cost an arm and a leg, I would appreciate it.

Travelex is another good one. Regardless who you select, review the plan, options, and what's covered carefully, depending on what's most important to you . . trip interruption, medical or evacuation, etc.

yah, the most important thing to me is if there is a hurricane blowing, that the trip insurance will cover it if we have to stay someplace else or get delayed or something like that, since I'm going in August. thanks, I think I have used travelguard in the past, will check out their prices.

I used HTH Worldwide for travel and medical, easy online setup. My wife's globe trotting choral group uses a travel agent who recommended this outfit. Seemed okay to me.

From Clark Howard - "the consumer warrior" website: http://www.clarkhoward.com/news/clar...ce-guide/nFbh/
Policies cost about 5% of total cost of a trip, but it's worth it. Consumers should always purchase a policy independent of the cruise, tour or vacation planner. Never purchase the trip protection plan from the trip organizer. They are designed to protect only the company and not the consumer. Always pay deposits and final payments by a real credit card and never by debit card or check.
You can comparison shop for trip insurance that suits your needs at http://www.insuremytrip.com/.

I never thought about the point of getting insurance from different provider - but makes sense. If the worst happens and they go out of business - not only is your trip ruined, but what chance do you have of getting money back.

What's wrong with paying by debit card? I don't have any credit cards, just my one debit card, and that is all I have ever needed in the past? Anyway, I went to insuremytrip.com in the end, and bought a package through Allianz for $94 bucks. Anyway, appreciate all the feedback, thanks.

He just prefers people to use CC instead of Debit. In a nutshell, is because there are more laws on the books protecting against CC fraud - not as much protection against Debit Card fraud.
That is a whole other topic, though - just search his site if you really want to know.

Glad you found trip insurance that suited you.

FYI- We purchase through insuremytrip.com and go with travel guard. You can get insurance as soon as you pay a portion of your trip and then add to the same policy as you go. For instance we always pay 2 nights for our room and buy the insurance. When we purchase the airfare we add that to the policy. Not sure if they all do this but travel guard does.
