    Make an iPhone JA friendly?

We are planning on returning to Negril again next April, and I am wondering if I can get me iPhone4 to the point where it will work in Jamaica. I am going to get the newest iPhone for Christmas, so no worries with needing to convert back to being able to work in the USA. Can I do it? If so, what will I need to do?

All you need to do is unlock it. It will them be a simple "swap out the sim cards. You can then use it with any provider you like, here or back home.

If you have a micro sim - no worries! Most repair places can cut the larger sim cards to fit the micro sim slots!

We have At&t and our Iphone 4 and 4s worked fine the last two years on the cliffs, only thing with even with the international roaming it is a little costly but works great.

Depending on the roaming plan, the cost to "roam" in Jamaica can be a little costly to very very costly. Please read the fine print on your plan carefully! Or simply unlock the phone there or here (the max cost would be ja$1500 or about us$16) and get a sim card (about us$5). Daily roaming on some international plans can be the better part of us$100... per day... and that does not include the per data usage or per call expense... simply the roaming charge...

Yes. To be clear, I want to use my iPhone with a Jamaican carrier. I am not interested in paying AT&T roaming charges. Can I buy data usage from Digicel, too?

    Ryan,

Yes, Digicel offers a 4G Mobile plan (that also works with 3G phones) for as little as ja$100 a day. You can check their data plans on their website or when you get here. Very easy to activate.

I'm curious how do you get to the sim card on an Iphone? That's where I see the possible hiccup.

    Hi Booger, It's easy!
There is a tiny pinhole located on top of the iPhone, (right next to headphone jack), you just need a paper clip to stick in the hole, and push down firmly until that slot pops out and you will see the Sim card there. Anthony says he's not sure if doing so will void an iPhone warranty so you might want to double check that first.

Re: Make an iPhone JA friendly?

I just dealt with this last week. I took my iphone 4 downtown to get it unlocked, and they wanted $120 US to do it! My friend was quoted $150 US for hers. So I went home and did some research, tried to jailbreak/unlock it myself, learned after hours of messing around with it that my version couldn't be unlocked at this time. I researched further, and found out that if it is an AT&T phone, and if the phone is not under contract, AT&T will unlock it for you for free. You can find out more on AT&T's website. I had my friend in the states (whose father had gifted me the phone) unlock it for me. All she needed from me were some numbers you can find in your general settings, and I believe she did it via 800 number or online. It took a couple of days, and all I had to do was plug it into itunes and restore it. Super simple. You do have to cut the sim to fit, but it was simple and I did it myself. I've been using it with digicel for a couple of days now, and I have no complaints!

    Hope this helps! Good luck!
