Re: Rooms on the Beach
We stayed at rooms for a week in early December last year. It was our first trip to Negril and we ended up their with Westjet Vacations. We thought it was good value. Nice big rooms, comfie king beds (terrible pillows), good AC and the bathrooms seem to have all been renovated relatively recently. You do trade a bit of character for the up-to-date amenities. Everything was really clean. Nice beach, lots of chairs and enough shade to go around.
The location is great if you are into the nightlife - the Jungle, Roots and Alfreds are all an easy walk/stumble away. The flip side to this is if you want quiet at night, this is probably not a good choice. At that time of year, the restaurant on site was closed and the bar shutdown basically at sunset. There were so many options close by that this didn't really bother us. Big ups to Sunnyside!
The hustle on the beach was thick. I don't know this for fact, but we were told that for those plying their trade on the beach, one of the last places they could get through from the road to start heading north was near Rooms. That meant a higher than average concentration of folks looking for your attention at all times of day and night. Our experience supported this. There is a wall on the beach that creates a nice 'hustle free' zone behind it, so if you wanted to be left alone, it was easily done. Security was also really on top of things.
Would I stay there again? Absolutely, though I have to admit now that we have had a chance to get to know Negril, there are many places we will try before we find ourselves back there.
