ok well sir... I would like to hear ur suggestion to change it... no rudness or anything of the sort intended I am personally curious ...If you had the authority how would you change it so that the jamaican pepole benifit and the customers dont have to see that charge on their bill... keeping in mind they prolly are supposed to conform to some sort of base wage. To make it fair throughout the island. that is a guess not a fact tho.

A fair situation would be one where the service charged is factored into the price of the food. My career has been about making customers happy and I've done an awesome job of it, that said a service charge is unnecessary given that restaurants can raise prices and pay their employees fairly.

Some call it accounting practices, I call it deceptive business practices designed to disguise(poorly) the price of a meal.

so what your saying in lamemans terms is... they say oh its $10. for this meal but add service charge of $2. so your saying its deceptive to do so because they add it after the fact and they should just put $12. on the menu in the first place instead? right? and instead of doing it after the fact. they should just put it in the menu . but you do agree that that two dollars should still be split amongst the crew? ok but if its not documented on the recipts the resturaunt wouldnt have to give that two dollars to the crew. there would be no way to hold the resturaunt accountable for that . but now that they do have this documented on the recipts if anyone wants to despute wheather or not they got their portion of the tip it could be calculated by say a lawer or judge if the recipts are there stating each charge individually instad of prying at a percentage of a menu price. also im guessing... all speculation.... the reason they put it on recipts is so that they HAVE to give that portion to the crew... if this be true it actually comforts me... because at least everyone HAS to get that money... again... speculation

Here are some of the reasons that I tip staff very well when in JA and bring school supplies etc with me when I visit:

Minimum wage rates (these are new rates effective September 2012)
General: $5,000 JA per 40 hr week (about $55 USD)
Security Guards: $7,239 JA per 40 hr week (about $80 USD)

Cost of school books per student (for the school year just beginning; per article from the Gleaner a few days ago) http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/magaz...-year_12339454
    Grade 1 $6,184
    Grade 2 $6,115
    Grade 3 $7,134
    Grade 4 $12,841
    Grade 5 $11,839
    Grade 6 $13,438
    Grades 7-9 $15,147
    Grades 10-11 $17,657
Note: above prices are for books only – additional costs to be paid by parents may include school uniforms, transportation if school not within walking distance, school lunches, etc.

I'm sorry if this caused a bunch of anguish. Not my intent.

Not your fault Flip. This happens here from time to time. I think most of us just keep hoping this particular thread ends...and it does not.
