    condo in Negril?

Well after 10 years of 3 or 4 one week visits to Negril per year i'm at a point where i'm able to spend larger amounts of time away. I'm thinking it might make sense to buy a place. I'm a real estate novice having bought exactly one house in the US in my life. Does anybody have any general advice about real estate in Negril? Do I need a realtor? Do I need a Lawyer? Any recommendations. I'm looking for a small, easy, not fancy apartment. I'll probably be going down in September to start looking.

    thanks,
    goatman

I'd hold off on buying if you've only been doing a few one week visits per year. Find out if you can manage longer stays first by renting a house or condo. Start with maybe one month and go from there. This way you can establish yourself within the Negril community, make friends and contacts and you'll have an easier time, more inside information and will be less likely to be taken advantage of once you are ready to buy.

Personally, I would start with Jean Gaynair at Negril Beach Club Condos as she has a few units for sale. You don't NEED a lawyer but you should definitely WANt one so that your interests are adequately represented.

Having just recently purchased a condo in Negril I can tell you it is easy. You will want a lawyer. When you are ready for that level, ask around for recommendations. Lawyers charge a few percentage points of the total sale and are very useful, especially for someone from outside the country.

Here are a couple more places to check: Point Village (http://www.pointvillage.net), Beach Combers (http://www.beachcomberclub.com/index.htm).
