It was brown for a few hours yesterday, but I went for a swim in the evening on mary's bay (by Canoe) and the water was fine... it's fine now.

I know it is not raining now but over the last several weeks there has been a lot of rain in the mountains and it takes time for that extra water to make its way down the river system. Normally the amount of water exiting the Negril River does not have that big a impact on the area beaches but when you have a abnormal amount of run off this happens not only in Negril but any coastal area anywhere in the world. The normal flow only has light stain color but extra run off from heavy rains picks up more debris and gets a darker color.

Look across the morass. Look North and the district you see at the base of the hills is called "Silver Spring"....... that's where Discovery Falls is. Look a little bit south and you're looking at Springfield. Go up to Mt. Airy and look South of Springfield and you'll see Spring Garden. That range of hills and the bigger ones behind them are what created the morass. The districts are all called "spring" because we have a lot of springs.

After a strong rain those hills drain down to the morass along with the normal flow of fresh water from the springs. Sooner or later that brown water mix hits Long Bay and then becomes "brackish" (salt and fresh mixed) which turns it even darker.

That's what you're seeing. Thank Jah for the rain...

    The brown soon gone....

Thanks Livin and Capt. for the explanations. I always suspected the rain was the reason, but wasn't sure how long it would take the fresh water to get to the sea.

Yesterday was the 3rd day in a row the river came in... highly unusual. The wind direction also has something to do w/ it, or so I was told yesterday. Good explanations on what causes it. No rain here since the night I arrived (Wed. 6/8), but there was plenty before then. I also overheard talk in the gym this a.m. that there was lots of rain at "the falls". Could be one of many but, the point is, it's been raining inland. The discolored water is nothing to fear, simply nature at work.
