Have your flights tracked with Yapta.com.....they will notify you when the flight you would like changes from day to day. and will help you get a refund if the price drop is lower than what you paid. I believe its 150$ for delta, usair, but only 50$ for jetblue. This could
solve your early booking problem. I've already gottena 50$ refund from jetblue due to yapta.

We used to get great deals waiting until about a month or a month and half before the trip to book, but that just doesn't seem to be the case anymore. The last few trips the best prices have been by far early on, more than 3 months before the trip. For our November trip, the prices went up pretty significantly around August the past two years. Most people going with us had to pay a good deal more than we would have if we had booked earlier, and several people that had not booked tickets are backing out due to the price.

If prices are going all over the place, and you see a reasonably cheap day, I would go ahead and book. Flights are a lot more crowded these days, and I'm not sure the days of waiting for great sales are over.

We booked the air for our Dec trip back in April. We're in Canada and good airfare is hard to find; when I saw it for just over $500 pp I jumped on it. I can't help but watch after I book, they went down slightly but not enough to make me regret my decision

Fares for me in January are 'WAY up this year - $650./person from Central New York with one stop. Two years ago I paid $425./person. Also, the prices are creeping up, not down, and the planes are full (look at the seating charts when you look for tickets). If prices are bouncing around the way you report, take the sub-$500 price now if you can get it. The chance of a significant decline is slim, and the chance of ending up paying $800 is significant.

I always go odd days. Tues to Tues; Thurs. to Thurs. Tues to Thur (10 day) etccc.
Check out a couple of resorts you want to stay and call them. Tell them how many and for how long and work out a deal.
