Philadelphia and its surrounding area - negril visitors

I have noticed a lot of people around here live in or near the city of Philadelphia. Who is who? Anyone have any good local spots to feel the vibe? The graperoom on Main Street manayunk has 16 oz red stripe cans. The liquor stoor on ridge ave in upper roxborough has Appleton rum

I am from Southern Chester County originally. I have lived in Manayunk for almost the last 5 years. I have been to Jamaica 3 times. To Negril once. With a trip coming and November and on on the books for end of April early may.

We are only an hour from Philly, in Easton, PA. We recently checked out the Jamaican Jerk Hut on South Street. We enjoyed it~the food was good and sitting outside in their yard we definitely got the Negril vibe. We have Jah's Jamaican restaurant here in Easton, they make a great curry chicken patty.

But, best of all, we have friends from Jamaica right here in town who have treated us to their delicious authentic cooking, homemade sorrel wine @ Christmas...and of course schooled us a bit before and after our first trip last January.

We'll be back in Negril for 10 days in February!

I am kind of between Bethann and flipadelphia. I live in northern Montgomery county in a tiny little town called green lane. Originally from Kansas, but have lived in the Philadelphia region for going on 24 years. My trip to Jamaica over thanksgiving week will be the 14th for the wife and I.

I'm in Eagleville, which is between Norristown and Collegeville. There used to be a nice Jamaican restaurant in Norristown called Negril, but it has been closed for 7 or 8 years now. Then I found a little hole in the wall Jamaican joint, but have only found them open 1 time. They are on Markley Street near Marshall Street. I think the place os called Judy's or something like that. I gave up all hope and would rather just head down to the rock for the real thing. My wife and I will be down in December.

    Regards,

    Bob

Good to know! I haven't been in there since it was called the Grape Street Pub.

I usually pickup cases of Red Stripe (or Red Stripe Light) at Javie's Beverage across from the Ivy Ridge station. I've also had no problem finding Appleton at the Wine and Spirits on Main Street.

I've heard good things about the Jamaican Jerk Hut on South Street, but haven't gotten there yet. There is a Jamaican restaurant on Rising Sun Ave. in LawnCrest, called the Flavor Spot. It looks authentic and gets good reviews, but again, I have not tried it yet. The neighborhood is not for the faint of heart, but sometimes that's where the best food is.

I sometimes pick up jerk chicken from a Caribbean lunch truck near 30th St. Station called Gigi's. It's good for a quick lunch, but it is a far cry from the real thing. I guess the marinade is not the same and the chicken is cooked in a truck, instead of slow-cooked in a barrel, and that makes all the difference. They don't even have any granny sauce! However, when I have a 1/2 hour lunch break, it's better than a lot of other alternatives in the area.

Ah, I was just at 30th on Friday. I had a business meeting in New York and took the train. Would have checked it out.... Mike it sounds like you live near Manayunk. I live about 150 feet from Dawson Street Pub.

Yep. I'm on the other side of the hood, near Umbria and Fountain St. (Union Jack's Pub).
