Instead of penny whipping everyone they should be looking at the big picture and seeking to entice the tourists back to the island. The economy is rough everywhere but when tourist don't come to Jamaica, their economy is even worse because it is so dependent upon the tourist dollar due to the lack of other industries. JCAA already is operating in the black, should they be looking to profit in this manner? Who will benefit from airport enhancements if nobody is coming in?
Airfares have increased not only because of the fuel costs but volume of passengers changed as well. Available flight patterns seem more convoluted, with multiple stops and configurations I have never seen before. The airlines are trying to fill their seats on every flight anyway they can. This is not conducive to bringing more people to Jamaica either. Who wants to fly from New York to Toronto to Miami just to get to Montego Bay for a reasonable fare? 14 hours travel time for what could easily be a 3.5 to 6 hour trip.
