I would advise you not to use any expensive phones while in Jamaica. You may loose them or have them stolen. Just spend the $40 to get a Digicel or Lime phone.

Unless Lime prices have changed since Marko bought his in July, the phone, sim and tax were just under $20 US. Less than half the price of Digicel. It is more expensive to call a digicel phone (than another lime, or even Canada or US, if memory serves me correctly) but their prices are lower than digicel... So you're not paying more using Lime, it may end up being less (been a while since I looked at a comparison of prices per minute). Correct me if things have changed.
I would never use my home cell phone for calls or texts while there. I do keep it in airplane mode with data off and use at my hotel for emailing/surfing via free wifi, then lock it up between use.
was there last month and things are still the same..........
Lime is by far the less expensive route to go.......
last month LIME was offering a special one day promo with a cellie and a 100 credits for a $1.000J's with activation....
the phone alone usually costs $1250........so you made out on this deal and then some....virtually free
the line at the Sav Lime store was out the door and down about half a block.......lol
and no it wasn't announced ahead of time.......
wi all got a text message on Lime about 3PM telling us about the promo
and mi don't know if they have had it again........
go SLIME.......lol
Cool Runnings, Marko

I second the above - even I got hit and had my simple basic and practically antique Nokia "lifted." Fortunately I convinced Digicel to stop activity on the phone, was able to preserve my credits and got a new sim card but kept my old number, which I have had for donkey years. Cheap phone for local use is the way to go.
Don't forget, you can unlock one of your old U.S. phones(tri or quad band) for free from your phone company and just get a Lime or Digicel Sim card... We took one of our old Blackberry's this Summer to Negril...Noooo pronblem!
Happy Travels...

I had a question of my own, and I googled for the answer. I thought it may be useful to post here.
Almost all cell carriers have an email to SMS interface. This could be used by friends/family in the US to send a text to your Jamaican cell phone.
For Lime it is: 876XXXXXXX@txt2lime.com. ( Use your phone number instead of "XXXXXXX". )
For Digicell it is: 1876XXXXXXX@digitextjm.com
Of course I found this using google, and I have not tested either method. If anyone can verify that would be awesome!
The reason this is important to us, is that it seems Lime has very cheap rates to call the US. My wife runs a business, and there are times her employees really need to talk to the boss. Instead of running up the higher US based phone international rates by them calling looking for us, we plan to just have people text us with a request to call in. That way she can also call back when it's convenient to her.![]()
Spiff - my trick for having my family avoid large bills calling my ja cell was to have them call and let it ring twice. I told them to hang up after two rings. I would then call back any missed call. This way they either were not charged at all or very little.
Just wondering if anyone has bought a phone within the last couple of weeks? I'm heading down soon and wanted to get an updated idea of how much phone and setup is costing this year? I was thinking of stopping at the digicel in MoBay for the ease of hitting cambio, getting supplies, and a phone all in one step. Thanks
I just purchased my first Jamaican phone to use on holidays about 3 weeks ago. I am with Marko.. Lime is awesome. I got my phone and two sim cards (they were having a buy one get one free offer on sim cards) for under 1500 j's. Each card had 100 credits on it and last me the 2 weeks that I was there. For under $20 US.. i have my phone and talk / text time. great deal.
I also know that if you want to call international its really cheap with Lime!
Jamaica Bound!
Oh, I purchased at the round about, beside the little hi/lo market .. upstairs. Just ask anyone in the area and they will tell you where it is.
