DEET is the most effective. Picaridin is only as effective as low-percentage DEET products, but it is an alternative...http://www.brms.com/nattrapel-8-hour...FVBgMgodhE0AEg
Citronella-based products are even less effective than Picaridin products.
Make sure your DEET products have around 40 percent DEET for maximum effectiveness...

When we go I use Skin So Soft body oil. I carry it in a spray bottle and use it right after each shower and I haven't had any problems with insect bites
My wife is the best bug repellant I can use. After 10 trips I never get bit because she seems to (unfortunately for her) gets all of the bites. We can be together 24/7 and she'll get dozens of bites but none for me.
avoid sweet smelling and oily lotion on your legs and feet, no use givin 'em a "gravy" to dine on also
