I am with the Captn on this. Why take cash just to exchange it? Use your ATM. I don't get all I need upfront from the ATM...I go every second day. I don't get charged a fee with my ATM, YMMV...
And, if you absolutely, positively have to have USD, one of the ATMs at ScotiaBank gives you the option of getting USD....
