Point Village Condo Vacation - Reviewed

Point Village is former resort now owned as individual condo units and is located at the far end of the 7 mile beach. It is located on what is known locally as Rutland Point, just across from Booby Cay. As one might expect, it is a quiet location. Lots of long term vacationers own condos and stay there; we noticed a few locals living there as well. The landscaping is well maintained, but some of the accessory buildings around the property are well past their glory days and have obviously gone unused for some time.

Again, it's quiet here. There are two beaches - we preferred the clothing optional one next to Hedonism and hung out there several times, but both are beautiful and we were the only ones out there almost every time. Although it was not as quiet being next to Hedo, the clothing optional beach just felt more secluded, as it is bordered on all non ocean sides by vegetation. If relaxing on an empty beach to the sound of the waves is your thing, this is a strong selling point for a Point Village stay.

Booby Cay is probably 1/2 mile offshore from Point Village. I swam there one morning, but wouldn't recommend it. Not a lot to do once you're there, and you take your life into your hands as boat and jet ski traffic is frequent.

Point Village is away from town and from most anything else. We wanted to get to the grocery when we arrived to stock up on supplies for the week. The mini-mart nearby is a quick easy walk, but the supplies are limited. Drivers wait outside the gate at Point Village (which is a short walk to the main road), but their prices were a little expensive considering you can get a route taxi on the main road for 100J per person to the roundabout, which is what we did.

We collected everything we needed at the little grocery on the roundabout and cooked many of our meals at the condo. There is a little grill during the day at the Rutland Point craft market for good cheap food, but pretty much all of the other dining options involve a long walk or a cab ride.

We also walked along the beach to town a couple of times and while it is a few miles, it is a beautiful trip. There's no way it's actually 7 miles from the Point to the roundabout, but a walk from one end of the beach to the other and back will take a few hours (including the stops for the 140J cold red stripe or two). Lots of opportunities walking along the beach to practice how to handle the myriad of people trying to offer you goods and services. I did buy juice from a beach vendor.

The room we stayed in at Point Village was an upstairs studio and was clean but not sterile like your chain hotel - it had a lived in feel that was not offensive in any way. We didn't turn on the AC or TV the entire time we were there. My favorite feature was the french doors opening to the balcony and a literal stone's throw from the ocean and Booby Cay in the near distance. We left those doors open for the entire visit.

I would stay at Point Village again. We stayed there in December 2012 in the first week of what was considered high season at $80/night total. Great, quiet location for setting your own agenda amid the backdrop of the ocean and Jamaican weather. Maybe not ideal if you are primarily looking to party or interact with others, but those opportunities are close by and it was really nice to have something to retreat to after a long, hard day of playing in the sun. My advice for those staying is to be prepared to rent a vehicle, stay close to the property, or figure out how to use the route taxis so you can get to where you want to go when you venture out.
