Tipping at small hotels, like Seastar.

I always try and tip well no matter were we stay, but just get an idea from some o you others, what do you tip the bartenders, servers, maids, cooks. How much? How often?

Over the last 3 years I/We have been home 10 times.

The average of all the trips is 28.9% on food and drink.

Housekeeping 300 JA per day for the entire stay (though I only get the room made up up every other day or so)

I usually tip housekeeping $3-$5 a day, I do it daily because the same one that did the room all week might be off on the day we leave. I also try and bring a few small things to leave wit the tips, like chocolate, small bottles of lotion, nail polish etc. The housekeepers no matter where we have stayed have been fantastic. I usually tip the bartenders a dollar or 2 where we stay a couple of times a day and others depending on how long we are at their establishment. And waitstaff even though they usually have an automatic tip on the bill, I leave them a few dollars too.

We usually tip at the end of our stay - lump sum to the folks up front, with a little here and there along the way and 200 ja a day to the gals who look after the room - also special gifts to all, including security and maintenance and chefs, just because I love them all.
It's really a personnal thing - so whatever you are comfortable with.

$5US a day for maid if service is up to par ($50-$70 hotel per night range). 15% and up for food or bar service as long as service is acceptable at the very least. My first career was hospitality industry for 17 years, so I can spot BS ten miles away. Staff can save the eyerolling, ignore tactics and condescending manner (because Horrors! I don't drink alcohol!) for someone else.

LOL at service personnel who act like snobs. The lesson I've learned is that the very wealthiest among us in my area often dress like they are homeless, so don't judge by appearances. I treated everyone with the same respect that I would like to receive and my tips reflected that. I could get a tip out of the cheapest Charlene who no one else wanted to serve.

If we all treated others as we wished they would treat us...the world would be so much better....words we live by in our home!

We like to leave $5/Day for housekeeping and tip the Bartenders a flat $10/Day. Last day we leave $25 - $50 for housekeeping depending on the length of stay. We also leave the things that we bought that we don't want to bring home... usually a kettle, the unopened beer and wine plus the towels that we bring/buy. Food is always a minimum of 20%. We also leave any OTC meds.
