Too funny. I'll admit I didn't get it at first either, I couldn't figure out how so many could go to Jamaica and do nothing but eat subs, why not jerk chicken? Then the penny dropped...

I know I first saw the reference here from Rum and it made me laugh because a group I know has used that euphemism for a while. The root of it goes to a running gag on the tv show How I Met Your Mother. The main character does not want to relay to his kids what they were actually doing so whenever it comes up in the story they're having a sandwich, usually a hoagie... e.g. the hilarious Jason Segal as Marshall in a flashback to their college days...

What's so funny 'bout Peace, Love and Understanding?
I got it when I was reading Rums report but I could see how easily someone might have thought it was a real sub sandwich

Time for a sub I think!
If you are worried about something, do something about it. If there is nothing you can do, why worry!
So it was Rum that started it...thought it was gerryg...he eats a lot of subs on vacation...![]()
The HBO TV series "Weeds" had several episodes where non-medicinal herbs were dispensed through a deli/sub shop. This is from 2005 or 2006 and I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly) that this colloquialism came from that or was already imbedded into the subculture surrounding this cottage industry.
Many trip reports have great stories about tours, pub crawls, beach strolls, romantic moments all of which I immensely enjoy; the subplots of these stories are also quite intriguing.
This is clearly a hot topic looking at the hits on this thread.
First time I saw it was in Rum's report.
And if not knowing what was being referred to by the code "subs" makes me a bad parent, then I guess I'm the worst parent in the world!
It's odd you'd choose to preach here, Island. Got an agenda?
Live and let live!
RE: The Peg Boy...
PREACHING? Just stating facts Bro- PARANOID much? You don't even know me- and you never have, never will. WE HAVE NEVER MET - and most likely never will- though I would love to make your acquaintence one day...if only to disabuse you of your notion that I am The Big Bad Wolf ;-)
My "AGENDA" ? Doesn't ANYONE read prior posts anymore? Because if you did- my "AGENDA" would be pretty clear but to sum it up for you in a phrase??- OK you asked for it..."FIGHTING IGNORANCE"... Has anyone here ever been PASSIONATE about anything? Because I am passionate...about Jamaica and her people, about ALL people having a decent life...
I have to say, you "Newbies" (and maybe NOT-so-newbies) to Jamaica really blow me away with your attitude. It's like Negril is your personal playground and what you do while there, as long as you don't "get caught" by the law is your own business and therefore does not affect anyone other than yourselves. "Some" seem to view breaking the law as a "personal choice" and don't care who gets caught in the process...
That said, I have seen COUNTLESS "how to ganja" threads dissolve into detailed "destructions" that involve naming places, people, sources of drugs...and that is NEVER a good thing...especially in a very high-profile public forum...
Not only that but-GUESS WHAT? What you say, do, how you act, what you buy, WHAT YOU CONDONE by participating in activities in Jamaica- it all reverberates, throughout the entire country. You could call it the power of attraction, or maybe just "supply and demand". WHEN you selfishly seek illegal "pleasures" abroad- you are setting up a DEMAND/SUPPLY situation. Tell me, WHAT kind of energy do you think that creates- is it positive- OR is it negative? If you are bringing children to Jamaica now or in the future- what kind of energy do you want them to "get" from Negril?
IF you aren't sure, ask a Jamaican- not one that is trying to service you or sell you something on the beach or even the cliffs. Get out of town a bit, to know a true local; they have boundless wisdom and vision; THEY KNOW what they want for their communities future- and trust me, it doesn't involve a drug network. If you don't have time...let the Jamaicans I have met sum it up for you...or ASK THEM if they want their kids to be the beach bwoy selling "product" to the tourist when they grow up...Failling that-Would you want your kids to be a dealer? Think about it, that's ALL that I ask...
When you have a DEMAND for an ILLEGAL product, it sets up a network of CRIMINALS. Hey, sorry they may be your "beach buddies" -even "best friends"- but you have to remember- YOU are the person who put them in that position- the position of DEMAND, and also in the position or RISK so they aren't the ones who should be "judged" if that is your thing... OH and BTW because of the NATURE of the criminal transaction- you are also setting yourself up for risk- not necessarily from your "buddies"- BUT those who would would know your business...via your "buddies" whether intentional or not...REALITY :-o IT HAPPENS!
SO maybe you are thinking now (with the part of your brain that craves chemical distraction)- HEY- my friend/dealer NEEDS ME. Without me, he/she won't survive! REALLLLYYY? Isn't there some other way to "HELP" your good friends? Why not just buy them some food/ use their taxi, etc etc etc...
OHBOYOHBOYOHBOY here I go, judging you...or maybe it's a challenge...
I could go on, but...but you all have MINDS- use them to think, to create, to MAKE A DIFFERENCE...Try it once when your experience isn't "chemically enhanced" - or maybe write it down while you are and go back to it afterwards ;-) ...You may surprise yourself. Jamaica is SO AMAZING; become aware, BE PRESENT!!!! Not just there, but in LIFE!

IF this is "Preaching"- asking people to ASPIRE to something better, something higher, other than the "medicated" realm, well...call me "Reverend" - just don't call me late for supper!
