I enjoyed our trip to Pelican Bar yet the snorkeling was not very good there. It could have been the day we were there for it was a little murky yet still...I've snorkeled quite a bit in Jamaica and that would not be my main reason to go. The uniqueness of the bar, the food and wonderful people is the main reason. Plus the trip there, either by boat or water is always nice. I don't think they have the boat trip from Negril to PB now...but we were fortunate enough to have done that. Long, long boat trip, but following the coast line is awesome. The road trip is always fun with frequent stops here and there. Still not a short trip either. Kind of one of those items on a bucket list!! Enjoy!!
Yep.....there is nothing to see snorkeling at the Pelican Bar. Water is warm for some nice swimming....just nothing really to see under the water.
If you snorkel towards the actual pelican sand bar, it gets really really shallow. There lots of sea urchins around, but regardless it's still nice to snorkel around the pelican bar. You'll see the odd fish, on the occasion you'll see different sealife. Around the pelican bar itself there's lots of vegetation and the depth of the water around the place is around 2.5 to 3 feet deep. Pretty kid friendly actually.

Great swimming but if you want to snorkel take a boat out to the reef. When we where at PB we saw a huge stingray that would come and eat the fish guts the cooks tossed in.
I guess it would have to depend upon what day you go. The first time I went, the water was clear, saw some stingrays, a puffer fish, got to hold sea urchins (not the brown spiny ones), but the second time I went the waves were a bit choppy and even though it is shallow, the water was pretty murky.
It's a good experience no matter what, but no I wouldn't go just for the snorkeling.
