    Driving

Been driving around Negril since we first started hitting the Island. We've done the crazy roads to Black River, almost hit a mongoose once but never had any trouble. That is until last trip when we got stopped at a police check point. I won't go into great detail but it seems I didn't have one of my forms up to date. After much debate about me having to drive to Sav to sort it out, a nice old police officer steps up to the window and tells the other cops to leave. He smiles puts his head in the window and says "My wife and I would like to go to dinner tonight. " Me being the tool I am I actually said "that sounds nice officer" then looked over at my wife and gave her a look like who gives a **** about this guys dinner plans. He leans in and says it again. This time my wife hits me on the shoulder "give him some money idiot" Ten dollars later we are at home drinking a red stripe with a promise to have everything in order next time. Fun stuff

don't know if you "have to have" . . . i've been driving for 8 years now with my canadian license, seems to be sufficient at island car rental . . . have had many stops by the police and no one suggested an international drivers license . . .

I have rented cars the last 3 trips and have had no big issues. Canadian drivers license is fine for them (or whatever country of origin) - It is the documents from the Car rental company that show you are the person who the vehicle is rented to as well as the Rental Companies ownership slip that they need. I always ask at check out "Do I have sufficient documents to satisy the JCF if I am randomly pulled over". The 1 time I was pulled over , the cop was pulling every 10 -15th car (mostly with tinted windows) to see who would buy him lunch. I showed him the papers and smiled sweetly and we were back on the road.!!

I tend to be a bit slower in Jamaica at times, lol. You only need your regular licence and a bit of adventure!

That's hilarious! 10 bucks is all it took? I figured the pay-off would be upwards of $100.

I've been through a checkpoint a couple times with our driver, but never got stopped. Probably because our driver is clean-cut and has his JUTA tags up to date. One time, as we were driving down the road out of YS Falls, we saw the driver of the car in front of us throw a spliff out the window. He was a white plate, but he was transporting some tourists. Our driver said,"I know that guy. There must be a checkpoint up ahead". Sure enough, there was a checkpoint less than a mile up the road. The police stopped the white plate, but waved us through. We kept driving and didn't look back.
