We stayed at Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios on our honeymoon and it was an amazing resort but once we found Negril, I don't think we'd go back to that area, even to Royal Plantation. I would miss Negril. We went to Couples Negril in October and it was great. You can sign up for the Romance Rewards and spend a day at Couples Swept Away, too. They will transport you for free and I think they take you at 10 a.m. and bring you back at 4 p.m. Don't forget to sign up for the One Love Bus while in Negril.
Ochi is a big city with resorts. Negril is a resort town. Once you have been to Negril you may never go back to Ochi. Don't waste the travel day just go to Negril. All that being said it is your vacation, do what makes you happy!

It is a lot of travel between ochi and negril. You could take a charter flight, and it would not eat up your whole day (Tim air used to do boscobel to negril), but any of the savings you realized would definitely get eaten by that. Also... While your post said you are doing two chains, the "resort" experience is largely the same between the two. We have done both, and greatly prefer negril. Negril beach is about a million times better in my opinion as well. My wife likes to shop, and prefers the shopping in ochi (well, she used to... I understand it has gone downhill somewhat with the new pier opening elsewhere) in ochi rios to that found in negril. We have gotten some amazing deals on jewelry for her in ochi over the years. That type of duty free shopping is just so-so in negril, with the main outlets in Times Square. The craft markets are very similar.
Our trip this year is split between two hotels. We are doing a week at tensing pen, a small non-AI resort on the cliffs, then 5 days at couples to get my beach fix. Give negril a shot... You will probably never want to go back to ochi.
Our transfer from a resort in Ocho Rios to Negril took a little over three hours. We stopped once for a Red Stripe and a break. Have fun whatever you decide.
We move around a lot.... 4 or 5 times total in 1 trip. Yes we are there for more than a week or 2 or 3.

What if you got a private driver to carry you to Negril, and enjoy some stops along the way, making a day of sight-seeing on your way to Negril?
We are doing something quite similar on our next trip...
First four days in Negril and then eight days in a villa in Silver Sands. Silver Sands is in the town of Duncans (between Mo Bay and Ochi). We get to have all the fun of Negril for a few days and then chill out for a week in a lovely villa.
My only fear is that no one will want to leave Negril!!!!

I don’t think you’re being silly at all but given the conditions on the day you want to travel and remember you are also on JA time unless you are driving yourself it could take what seems like forever. Having done the Ocho to Negril thing before you are taking a chance on losing a day, I know I did. When you compare how much there is to do in Negril with Ocho; Ocho comes up a little short. Feb will be my 15th time to Negril and I’m still discovering new places and things to do. If you have tried Ocho and liked the Jamaican vibe there, then you will love Negril. Walk good!
