Considering getting a private driver for Friday night to take us from CN to Alfred's for the party. Will the driver wait there until we're ready to leave or do we give him a time to come back and pick us up? About how much will this cost? Any recommendation for a evening driver?
Have you used the route taxi system? $200J each way for both of you.....
This is our first trip so no we have not used the route taxi. I thought about this option but when I was searching here for more info I read stories of the illegal white plate taxi. It made me think for a first timer a private driver maybe a better option.Originally Posted by booger
Just make sure they have a red plate. Once they pull over offer them $200J for both of you to Alfred's and say it like you own the place. They are free to pick up others along the way, so keep that in mind. If you need additional piece of mind you can offer a driver sitting in front of CN $5 to take the two of you. It's up to them to decide if they want to accept it. If you like the driver get their number so you can call them for the return trip.
Bigzb - Nightlife in Negril is not discussed much in this forum in the short duration of my membership. Taxi fares at night depend on your destination, usually destinations, and time of the morning you return. Fares go up at night, but your route is a short one and not expensive. If that is all you do...
...however, the party in Negril does not begin until midnight. Let me qualify that, the nightlife for the locals does not heat up until then. If you plan to be home by midnite then you may be able to find a route taxi that is still going along Norman Manley Blvd, but he will be the exception. Alfred's on Friday is typically a starting point for the evening & then one proceeds from there to the next party. That part you will have to discover for yourself, but back to taxi fares. For example, I use a driver from midnight until 4-6:00a every night & pay him 1500-2000 $JMD. I use the same driver or two & tell him to watch my back. If you go to a club and are a bit uneasy, pay his admission and bring him in the club with you. Buy him a beer. No one will mess with you. The locals all know one another. The driver will wait for you at the club if you tell them to. If they do, then pay them at the end of your trip. Treat him with respect but be firm. In my experience, the majority of drivers are good people trying to make a living under difficult circumstances.
Have fun. Try a late night on the town...it is an eye opener. Leave judgement behind.

That bit of fear you have that first time you go out in Negril is what makes it so exciting. Just dont be stupid and you will have a great time.

I would not recomend a route taxi for first trip, hire a driver, just make sure you negotiate your price before getting in. Just remember the drivers working at the resorts are more expensive than the ones at the road.

Thanks everyone for the advice. What would be a average price for a private driver from 9:30-midnight? How much should I tip?
We're already feeling the excitement of our first night out in Negril. Being it will be our first night off the resort we're not sure about the late night parties yet but after a few drinks and that might change. lol I'm already starting to feel we should've made our trip longer.
