    dumb question?

How do you tell the difference between a "route taxi" and a regular taxi? Do they both have red plates?

Red plates are the Taxi's and should carry insurance for passengers.

They both have red plates. The route taxi will actually say "Route Taxi" on the fender or door including the route. Pretty easy to spot.

My understanding is that they both have red plates, the difference is in how you engage them. TO catch a route taxi, you go to the road and wave a red plate down, giving them 100j per person (they go beach - roundabout/100j and roundabout/cliff 100j, then vice-versa). This means the taxi will stop and pick up others or may have others in the car, it can sometimes get a little tight.

A private taxi fare is negotiated with a red plate taxi driver before you get into the taxi. You can flag one down or there may be one available at your hotel. Always agree to the price before you get into the taxi. I'm not sure what the current "standard" fares are - 500j for beach/beach, cliff/cliff, then 1000j between cliff & beach? Anyway, if you do not agree on the price they may charge you more than you are expecting.

All I do is go out to the road and when I see a RED PLATE coming I point DOWN. If they are Route (sign on door) they will stop.

Oh, and I was told long ago - there are NO dumb questions for this board. When you are new ask anything you like and someone may be able to help you.

It's $100J for the beach road to the round-a-bout and then $100J if you want to go up the West End Road. Basically each section, no matter how long, is the same price.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. What is the going rate this year for a private (non route) taxi. Beach to beach? Beach to cliffs?

Remind me to never buy a white wagon again in Jamaica. People are forever giving me the "point down" sign. Then they see a crazy woman tourist driving and they change their minds fast. It always baffles me since I don't have red plates.
