    US Airways Question

I have a quick question about booking through USAir. When booking your flights and it's time to pick your seats is there an added charge? I've searched their website and can't find this information anywhere. Just want to know what I'm in for before I start the booking process.

    Thanks!

Yes, seems USAir is now charging for certain seat locations. We were charged to have seats that were together and included a window seat. Keep in mind, you will have to pay for checked luggage. Some of these charges are waived depending on your frequent flier status.

Oh, how I wish Southwest fly into Mo-Bay.

This link will take you to their "Optional Service Fees" -- about halfway down the page there's a selection for Seats/Upgrades ... $5 - $99 per seat depending on location...

That said, during our past trip we chose not to do pre-seating (either direction) and took our chances with check-in at the airports. It worked out just fine and we paid nothing additional... Our flights were with American Airlines, but I think the same applies... - k

US Air uses the first handful of rows in economy for those with status or willing to pay extra to sit towards front. Other than that you can pick another seat in economy without an additional charge.

However, if all of the no additional charge seats are already taken you will have to make a decision...either pay for a preferred seat, or take your chances at no seat assignment. No seat assignment will mean you are assigned, at no charge, whatever is available when you checkin. You are guaranteed your seat, but may not be seating with whoever you are flying with.

When you search flights on their website, check out the seat maps. If you see seats available from about row 10 and higher you will not have to pay additional. Anything in an exit row is only available to those with status, and if available those seats are released for anyone when you checkin.

    Hope this helps,
    Rachel

This has been my experience with US Air, as well. I never pay for seat selection. At the time of booking (online) you will be asked to select your seats. If you book far enough in advance, you can pick any seat you want, except those designated as "premium" or whatever. One time we did not book far enough in advance, and I was unable to find two seats next to each other for my wife and I. I selected 2 random seats anyway, and waited until I was able to do an online check-in, 24 hours before the flight. When I logged-in to do my online check-in, those "premium" seats were now available to the public and I was able to snag them at no additional charge.

    It's all a big game.

Basically what Mike_D said. Generally, I book in advance and there has been no charge for most seats. Only certain ones had an extra charge. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

And here's something I learned when we flew home on USAirways 2 weeks ago (MoBay to Charlotte):
When we arrived at the airport I realized I had screwed up and selected seats in different rows for my wife and myself (honestly, it was unintentional!).
I was able to select different seats on the self-check-in screen - wound up with BETTER seats that did not cost extra.
It may have helped that we were at the airport way early (Sunday morning - no traffic).

All of the last-minute options depend on how full your flight is. While I do not doubt that some people have gotten good seats at the last minute, the flight we take PHL-MBJ has been totally full the last couple of years so people with no prior seat assignments have had to take what they could get - meaning scattered middle seats in the back.

I book well in advance and am willing to pay the few bucks extra to get a window seat up front.
