Ricks Cafe Cave Scam

Well, according to some TA posts, it appears that the "scam" is in full effet.

People swiming towards the ladder, told by locals to go to the caves, then all but extorted for money. Apparently, the security there just turns a blind eye to it.

One would think that since something like this would detrimental to their businees that they would put a stop to it.

Anyone here shed any light on what's going on there? Why Rick's management / security is turning a blind eye?

I hear ya on the "I heard" bit - as a story is passed around it gets worse and worse...

At any rate, the scam has been reported here too I believe.

It happened to my sons' preacher back in July this past year. Don't really think he'd lie about it. He said the guys told him to go this certain way to get out & once he got back there they told him in order to get out they needed money. They told him a certain amount... he didn't have that amt... they took what he had. He is a good guy... thought it was normal so he didn't say anything.

Pretty stupid scam considering not many people jump in the water with money in their pocket...

A young fellow with us jumped off the cliff during our stay over xmas. I had heard of the scam from the board and warned him prior. Two men tried real hard to coax him to the cave.I would say more people than not, have money on them when they jump.

why would anyone have money on their person when jumping or diving into wata. your statement doesnt make any sense at all

Everyone wears swimming trunks in Ja. There are little pockets to hold small items. When you walk the beach or go places , frequently you buy drinks.People place money in these pockets to purchase these items.The J's will spend wet or dry.

Board shorts have side Velcro pockets for things riders carry with them. My husband carries his wallet in a ziploc bag in a large pocket on his board shorts. He keeps it with him bc I am highly likely to leave my bag on a chair at Sea Star during the Pub Crawl!!!! Quite simple actually!!
