I saw a white lady on the beach, kinda 45sh,kinda chubby,tourist....She was walking hand in hand with a local "working man" (right?) she seemed happy. Maybe she no longer has a husband, maybe he died and once a year she gets to have a male companion and goes back to Negril where she went with her husband?
Some dont approve? So what ! She chose, just like the worker did....She is happy....

I find it more amusing that everyone assumes the girl is "working" if they're with a tourist.

Both of the times I've been to Jamaica I've met local women my age(26) and both times they didn't ask for anything. That said I definitely paid for dinner/drinks, but that's the same as if I was at home.

Are there women selling themselves? Definitely, but it happens in every country and every economy in the world and it needs to be legalized and regulated.

People really need to have "rules" laid out for them when they travel?

I could see if it's some obscure law in a country that you might not know about, but really just use common sense especially when you're traveling solo.

If people are looking for prostitutes, there are places where it is not only legal, but safe due to regulations / STD testing. Amsterdam, brothels in Nevada, etc...

Wikipedia states that 9% of sex workers in Jamaica in 2006 were HIV positive, with much higher concentrations (as much as 20%!) in tourist areas such as Montego Bay.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_in_Jamaica

On another note, when I stayed at The Treehouse last September, there was a guy who had one of the beachfront suites the whole time I was there and he had "company" every day and night at the bar and in front of his room... It was an interesting sight... Here is this pale, older, obese white guy surrounded by 2 or 3 beautiful young Jamaican women at all times... must have cost him big bucks! When I said to my wife that maybe they were just his friends she called me an idiot.

It's not just the men, plenty of women go to Jamaica to see their "boyfriends"... But from what I've read some pretend it's all a fantasy, they are seeing their boyfriend or lover, and not being honest with themselves that all they have is a hired gigolo.

EDIT: and then some percentage of these people get robbed (My iPad and cash went missing! They took my computer! All my jewelry/valuables were taken!) and aren't able to realize that they let people into their rooms and left themselves vulnerable... They don't put two and two together and realize what happened...

I wouldnt partake myself, but Im not going to JUMP the original poster for asking a simple question ,then demand an apology for what is reality? Silly....Do they look down with scorn at the "cigarette Guy" on the beach? I mean cigarettes kill right? There bad, right? No,why?
Because if you want to smoke, then smoke. If you want companionship then do it !

Be very careful. A few years ago we were guests at Xtabi. One evening a fellow at the bar had two
lovely ladies he was romancing. Seemed to me they were "working girls".

We met him again the next morning outside the Xtabi office. He had gone to their "place" that night.
He ended up with no cash, no credit card, and no SHOES.

    Be very carefull.

Exactly the kind of thing I was talking about, and probably happens more often than we think... I'm sure that it goes unreported often because victims are embarrassed, and anecdotal evidence leads me to believe that once the cops discover you were involved with hookers they aren't interested in filing a report or doing anything about it, probably thinking you got what you deserve.
