Weather 1st half of May on 7 mile beach area?

    Hi Everyone,

We are booked for Negril for May 3-11th...........I have read that May is a highly rainy month, but am wondering if there is any difference in that we will be there at the beginning of the month -- closer to the April end than the June.............. I can't imagine a beach vacation that is all thunderstorms and clouds........which is pretty much what AccuWeather.com is saying for the days that they have listed so far......right now it's the first 3 or 4 days and not one of sun!!

Has anyone been to 7 mile beach during early May in recent years? Should we plan for any swim time? Frankly, if mornings til noon are good I don't care if it rains afterward!

    Appreciate any feedback.

I went mid may last year. Every day around 3 or 4 there would be a short period of tropical rain and it would only last for about an hour or so. It was actually nice.

One thing about a weather forecast for Jamaica is that it will almost always show some form of rain. Jamaica has rainforests and arid-like deserts; mountains and flatlands. Negril is on the West End of the Island and most bad weather comes from the Northeast, East, South and Southeast during the summer months.

With the exception on heavy rains, tropical storms and hurricanes etc., you should just experience a brief shower around 3pm everyday but that is just a "cooling off" rain due to the high humidity.

The earlier in the day and later in the evening you plan your events your chances are better to avoid the rains. Once the sun heats up the land the clouds begin to form and the chances are better for a nice rain.

Learn to play dominos, take a nap or have a beer under a zinc roof like the locals do.

Yes, there will be weather during your reach!

It is not hurricane season; so there will be no tropical-type systems to be concerned with. With the heating of the early afternoon sun and the on shore winds pushing moist air against the mountains, there usually are afternoon showers. These can be hit or miss. Sometimes we have been at a bar in the middle of the afternoon (not recommended for everyone) and it's dry but we can see it's raining like crazy north or towards town.

This is Mother Nature's A/C unit, serving to keep the late afternoon temps from getting too unbearable.

But the days usually dawn spectacularly with abundant sunshine and crystal clear skies.

Average highs are mid-80's, lows are mid 70's until the end of the month when the highs begin to creep into the upper 80's.

We reached last early June with our 8 year old Granddaughter and the weather was perfect.

as stated ...dont put too much "stock" in weather reports for this time of year....and you will have 'plenti time for swimming...sunnin, and sippin.....

In Jamaica, as all over the world weather patterns are shifting...I'm sure your weather at "home" cant really be counted on as in the past..
.rainy seasons are changing, along with temperatures and other weather factors....have fun.......... wet is good
some of the best times are under shelter from the rain with friends and new friends...

    Welcome to the board!
Rain or not ...... I'd rather be on the beach in Negril than sitting here right now!

To answer your question of whether you should plan for any swim time, I would say that you will probably base your stay around the sand, the sun and the sea and not in that order. As for weather, it's hot, a likkle sun, a likkle rain. But then again Negril needs rain so we can shower. Or you can shower in the rain, if there is any! Just enjoy what old Ma Nature throws at you.
Rise early, treat everyday as though it's your last and your last day as it's your first.
