Size: 99.0 KBHi,
I was just going through boxes in my attic and came across old photos of Negril and surrounding areas. They go back to 1975 through 1999, my last visit to Negril. None are digital so I need to scan them and will post them on Negril.com when I do. Does anybody know what has happened to the bar "The Pickled Parrot" that was on west end road before Rick's. I remember they had an awesome rope swing and great bar. Did it get destroyed by the hurricane? I can't find any reference to it in current searches. Anybody know? I realize Negril has changed a lot over the past 40 years, back in the 70's it was a quiet little village and now it's pretty built up. Anybody know what became of the Villas Negril which was located on the hill by the roundabout behind the supermarket complex. Back in those days there was a disco in the plaza along with a bakery that had the best coco bread and patties. Can't find any reference to that either. How about Gloria's Sunset Cottages? located on Negril Beach, at that time close by Negril Beach Club, and later the Bar-B-Barn moved in to. I think that I had heard that Miss Gloria had passed away and that her Grandson Barry had taken over the property. Back in the 70's we used to camp out there in tents or rent small rooms just steps from the beach. Those were some awesome times. Wonder what Negril Beach is like these days? I heard it has become quite the spring break spot. I remember in 1999 there was considerable beach erosion due to the amount of property developed. I remember in 1975 being able to walk all the way along the beach to the point across from which the island is. A year later in 1976 the construction was started on what was then the Negril Beach Village, now Hedonism. I recall standing among the cinder block walls that were being erected during which seemed to be a work stoppage of some sort. Anybody ever know Mortimer Johnson up in Red Ground? You wouldn't forget him if you ever met him. I imagine many of my old friends are no longer with us. How about Brimsley Hall who at one time was a bartender at The Villas Negril poolside bar? I would enjoy hearing from anybody that has any insight into my questions. Regards, John G

    Hi Johng,

Yes Miss Gloria passed years ago. Barry has a part of the yard and has rooms to rent. Her will divided the property into three pieces.

We may have run into each other in the 70s. Miss Gloria's was one of our favorite places to go on the Beach from our place in Spring Garden.

In fact Ginny and I were the second people to ever rent the A frame. (Remember MB?)

Pickled Parrot was bought by Xtabi; they expanded and now rooms are built on that site. We too, miss PP - it was one of our favorite hang outs!!
I have won many awards in a lifetime of competition and service. But the highest was offered without plaque or fanfare on a hilltop in post Ivan Jamaica. A true Rasta and a dear friend observed "Chet you are like a father of men, you see need and fulfill that need without being asked". Let us be travelers and not tourist.

Pickled Parrot was purchased by Rockhouse...Chet made an oops as I know he actually knows it's Rockhouse...
Brimsley was at Roots Bamboo for years & most recently we saw him at Bourbon Beach (the old De Buss) for a stint.
Villas Negril became Chuckles Resort then Sunset Caribbean hotel and is now currently closed.
Spring Break was popular for quite a number of years and started to die down around 2001...the number of spring breakers at that time in Negril were huge and now it's just a sprinkling of kids.

Johng...I think it's time you came back for a visit but I'm looking forward to seeing your old photos!

    Hi Bnewb,

Thanks for your info!! Don't know how long you've been living in Negril but God Bless You in any event. I've been back to Jamaica twice in last two years. I have friends in Kingston and fly into there. Have done a bit of traveling in Portland (Blue Mountain Peak) and last trip went to Treasure Beach where I haven't been since 1981. Like the whole island it has grown a whole heap mon. Treasure Beach is nice but different from Negril. I haven't seen it but I understand they built a highway from MoBay to Negril. I guess it's a lot faster but that ride from MoBay was always fun for me Lucia, Green Island, Tryall. Kingston has changed a lot too. Did you ever have the chance to take the train from Kingston-MoBay, not that's really Irie. I'll get you some pics soon. Runnings, John

    Hi C & C,

Jamaica brings out the best in all of us. Have you ever checked out the housing development down past the lighthouse. Looks like a suburban US neighborhood that was in 1999. By the looks of it lots going on down there with Gated Communities, etc... Regards,
    John
