??? Can you use Gmail to text a message to Jamaican phone???

I tried to text to my friend who has Digicel and it didn't work. I didn't put anything in the subject line and entered their phone number XXXXXX@digitextjm.com and only said to reply if they got it. They didn't. Maybe I should include the area code if sending from the U. S.? And possibly the 1 access code?
