I just found this post - can anyone speak more specifically to the prices at the duty free liquor store compared to in Negril for rum and smokes? Better deal for smokes than bringing from home where packs are in excess of $7.50 per pack with new taxes? And is it a good deal to get some rum for rum punch mixing in our room or should we wait to go into town? We are very tight on time (only four nights) with such a short visit, so if we can save some $ and time, that's a bonus. Normally I would be more hell bent on giving local places business, but this shortie of a trip will make that a bit more difficult for snacks (we'll bring snacks) and booze. We can get juices easily, I assume.

Recommendations for a solid rum? I love me some Malibu back home...

Nicole, I'm guessing that buying cigarettes at duty free before departing the US would be the same price in Mobay arrival duty free. Anyone know for sure? I think a carton of Marlboros in departure duty free at Sangster were $28. I suggest you get some Jamaican rum, Appleton Estate perhaps and some rum cream and Coco Mania rum. I paid $11 for 1000 ml (33 ish oz) coco mania at Mega Mart in Mobay, great for mixing up punches, and it packs a punch! I can buy rum cream at home but not coco mania. I think I read you can't get either one in the states. You could find those at HiLo or even little places in Negril. Good to see that arrival duty free sells rum cream, and at a good price it appears.

Thanks, Melody! I'll probably only buy a few packs of smokes...I'm not a regular smoker at all anymore - but on special occasions, like being in JA, I'll need some when I have drinks. Great suggestions on the rum. I am getting ridiculously excited now...

Not sure that you'll be able to buy single packs at duty free arrival. And buying in Negril, you'd probably spend close to the same amount as at home. I think guys on the beach charge $700j a pack.

What you can do for smokes buy at the duty free in your US airport. The smokes you will get in Jamaica will not be the same. The pack will look the same but they are from a different Tabacoo farm. They will not taste the same. Buying duty free at the US airport will be with out all your state taxes. I think you are allowed 1 carton per person per week

^^THanks! When I smoke, I like a American Spirits, so I'll likely just pick up a few packs in my hometown. I wanna smoke the good ones and not curse myself whenever I get a craving for one because I cheaped out and got some cruddy floor sweepings or something.
