Re: Low cost places you trust with your bank card

I use my credit card in Jamaica all the time, everywhere, without issues. If there were an issue, my liability is $0. My card charges no transaction fees at all, so I get an excellent rate.

I wouldn't use my debit card as a credit card there though, only to get cash from an ATM. I don't want to have $ taken out of my account while they sort out any fraud. So I only use the actual credit card for purchases there.

Though I paid cash for my hotel (Xtabi) to get the discount, I paid with my debit card for my room charges for food and beverages. Had no problem worked just as expected. All other transactions were cash, exept for ATMs.

Correct, there is a foreign transaction fee of 1% however the ATM fees are waived just like when you use a BofA ATM. I use my BofA debit card for withdrawing cash at Scotia ATMs...I use a Capitol One platinum Master Card for large expenses like paying for our hotel as it's the only credit card I have that does not charge any foreign transaction fees.

I've used a CC not a debit card for hotel stays at various properties and "high" end restaurants such as Ivan's & Rockhouse, I wouldn't have an issue using it at Hi Low either. But mostly I use TC and convert to cash. I would never use a debit card while there.

Have used both ATM and CC at Sea Splash to pay for room, food and drink charges and never had a problem. We always just go to the office and pay.

I've used mine at Times Square, mostly in Tropicana and the other jewelry store across from it. I always take an emergency card with me as well... Just in case. One caveat though, is that I always tell the banks I am dealing with exactly when I will be there... Turn it on on this day, turn it off on this day.

I know that many think Travelers Checks are as ancient as dinosaurs....but, they do have advantages. To this day, still bring some cash, a credit card, debit card and a bunch of TC's. Just be sure and keep the copies in a separate place and you are good to go. Never had any problems cashing them, even at some of the smaller grocery stores on the cliffs. Take an ID with you, Drivers License works...no need to carry around your passport. I always would rather be safe than sorry. Never can tell when one could loose a debit card, have it be damaged in a machine or whatever...TC's are a great cushion of comfort IMHO. Have fun TicToc, as if that is a problem. LOL
