I've always considered the ride to and from Negril as one of the best parts of the trip.
We travelled on the old road in Feb. of '98 while the new road was under construction.
I think there was a labour issue at the time because the steamrollers and trucks were idle and no workers around as we passed close to the construction areas and only got the occasional glimpse of the new road being built.
With unlimited time and money, it would be cool to visit those tiny communities where the road used to run and take a little extra time to reach our favourite town.

I'm with you Big_frank! Totally enjoy the ride to Negril. I recall the "old road" quite well.....and have to say that I have fond memories of it. Last trip in...chose to take the back road into Negril. Really comforting and quite scenic. Does take a bit longer, but who cares. Got to stop at Border Jerk for eats and have to say...really top notch and great prices. Truly a nice relaxing ride with some new scenery. Sometimes it's nice to take the path less traveled!

I love the ride in. I've traveled on both roads, But hate the ride out... My time in Negril is never long enough

The greatest used to be taking the old Big Bus to Mobay from Negril or vise versa on the old road. Huge loud diesel engine with a distinctive horn that was used around every curve on the old road. It used to take several hours but cost only a few JAD for the ride. It was mainstream Jamaica with vendors, students, but generally few tourists. Anybody who has ever had the chance knows what I mean. I also have ridden the Big Bus in Portland and rode on the top where all the baggage is carried. Talk about a wild ride!!!

we rode a vegetable truck, in the back once going in....never wanted to "get that goofy" on the going home part....dont want to miss the "flying bus" going home

if you mean Anchovy to Black River.....yes a few times,,a good driver,sturdy wheels and some time.....there are many routes some big some small...all worth it......but save those routes when you are not heading for "real" home.....too many chances to be late....its all so beautiful but time consuming because of the many photo ops, and stopping and "gabbin"......... after a few years and you no longer "cant wait" to get to Negril has passed this is a great way to start another trip............Get Out and move a bit..if Jah wanted you to stay in one place, he would have given you "roots" rather than feet.....
