I am a smoker - trying to be a non-smoker, which is pretty hard in Negril with all the booze, but I digress .... and here is my 20 JA worth. I live in Canada and if I want a smoke in January when it's -30, I go outside - even in my own home or car. Share the air, guys -share the air. Even if it's an open air resto, go outside the boundaries of the resto. We've done it at home for years. What's that thing they always say on our island? RESPECT. There may be kids in the resto. People with allergies. It's their island, their hotel. If they don't want smoking on the balcony - take a walk (the exercise will probably do you good ....) and have one. It's no big deal. Carry an Altoids tin box or something similar for your butts. Don't leave them on the beach (big eeeeeuuuuuwwww from me, the smoker ....)
Just use the simple respect rule. We have done it too easily in the past in JA, because we could - unlike at home. Which was wrong.
It's a trend. It's a good trend. Go with it.We are visitors to their island, no matter how often we go or how much we spend. We need to respect their laws and wishes.
I don't have a problem with it. Think how great all those candy companies who sell their candies in tin boxes will do if we all use them for our butts? We are contributing to the economy if not to our own health.
Good for Couples for taking a firm stand. We can always take a walk. It's no big deal. Or .... we could all band together and fight it in the best way possible ---- QUIT! Go smoke free!
Just MO!
Sounds like they are serious.

Time to find another country for vacation? 500,000 fine and possible jail time definitely seems extreme for smoking outside....
Guess the motto...."no problem mon" is history. Going a likkle bit to the extreme if you ask me. I know, no one ask me. Whatever........tourism is a cash crop to Jamaica. Banning it in confined spaces is one thing...outside....come on. So many real crimes in Jamaica to worry about...and the police force is out to catch someone lighting a Matterhorn??![]()

You never see it coming ... and the next thing you know ... UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
I am a non smoker...but making arrests at a event such as the music festival will not be received well by many Europeans who a large portion of people are smokers...........at a time when Jamaica has so much competition in the tourism industry ...not a good time for negative press.........

How do you get caught??? I go weeks without seeing a cop in Negril???Also, you're telling me that the guy who pays(overpays)for the Butler service OCF room at Sandals for $800 per night is going to have an employee tell him to stop smoking???Doubt it?
LOL, it is absolutely my opinion. My opinion is that the ban is for revenue generation (e.g. arrests at Sumfest - outside venue). if gov was so concerned about public health they would better look into road safety or efficient investigation of murders - things like that. I'm all about not offending others, don't smoke tobacco and am disciplined enough to police my own actions and be considerate of others. "Love is the only law to obey" is my general practice.
The government has been...
ie. traffic lights, medians & sidewalks being placed on Norman Manley Blvd...road repairs are more frequent around the island...South Coast road construction...and a cell phone ban while driving should be introduced very shortly.
And, just a thought regarding the smoking charges at Sumfest...but if it was just a money grab...why were the people at Sumfest given several warnings, which they chose to ignore, before they were finally charged?
