    Smoking on the beach?

I have read the new smoking ban but it does not mention if smoking is allowed outdoors, on the beach. For those that may be in Jamaica after July 15th, is smoking allowed on the beach? What are observations concerning this?

This is just a commonsense ban on smoking in confined places. I don't believe it extends (or ever intends to extend) to outdoors unless, of course, smoking is declared a killer like it is somewhat now.

Ganja smoking is still illegal indoors or outdoors but that too may be changing.

Once the smoke clears on this issue, I am sure people will realize that there will be ample open areas to smoke tobacco or herb of choice. Now, if they could only ban the burning of plastic bottles...

Whoa...banning outdoor smoking? Before they do that can they please pass a law banning people from blowing their noses in the water? Come on. Priorities please!

Not a good analogy. Last time I checked blowing noses in the water (although messy) didn't cause lung cancer. I take the stand that all smoking of cancer causing substances should be banned indoors and out. Ganja (the last I checked) would not be banned using that criteria.

That is where the priority should be.

Not meant to be taken seriously Accompong. As I chug along in my carcinogen spewing minivan to Negril past smouldering piles of garbage assaulting the atmosphere to my coal fired AC room, I think second hand smoke on the beach would not be first on my enemies list.

    Dash,

And conveniently enough, second hand smoke on the beach is not first on anyone's list.... even the Jamaican government.

    To all,

This seems like much ado about nothing on many people's part....

A likkle update on where things are now..
Dr. Fenton Ferguson the Minister of Health has indicated that he is willing to look at the possibility of allowing businesses, particularly ones in the tourism industry to have designated areas for smoking. The Minister stated that he is not opposed to having areas for smokers after he paid a visit to a popular hotel where there is a designated area for smoking. Minister Ferguson was speaking on the Jamaica Information Service Programme “Issues and Answers” on July 18.

We were in Negril last week and was told about the smoking ban but everywhere we went we were aloud to smoke at the bar or at our dinner table , accept for the German Bar , they now have a designated smoking area outside the bar on the open cliff patio.
