Smoking on the beach?

we are from ontario canada, i feel weird smoking anything at a bar or restaurant in negril, i will go outside and walk a few steps away so my smoke does not effect other people, this is called respect, here in Canada we have laws that state we cannot smoke 30 feet from some business entrances, we stay at Rooms and they do not allow smoking in your room, no problem, i just go outside, soon come

Yes, because if it wasn't for cigarettes, there would be no carcinogens floating around. None from cars, none from grills, none from motorcycles, none from fires, none from aerosols, zero. Nothing.

Seriously, though, the considerate thing for smokers to do is simply take it outside and/or step away from any crowd before you light up.

I can't see how this is anything but a good thing? Nobody wants to be around second hand smoke. Just a little common sense and decency goes a long way.

Yet, a valid argument as well. Cigarette smoke dissipates outdoors and unless someone is blowing smoke right in your face, the harm from second hand cigarette smoke is no worse than any of the other countless sources that emit carginogens also floating through the air, especially with all the open air foodstands and restaurants in Negril that are cooking meat over charcoal.

I do agree with you, however, that cigarette smokers need to be considerate of others around them. I only smoke on occassion when I have a few drinks, but I would never light up indoors or even in an open-air restaurant. It's not that difficult to step away from the crowd. And if I see someone throwing their butts on the ground, I typically speak up.

As far as the smell is concerned, I'm not sure we want to get in the business of banning things just because we are offended by the odor. That is a very slippery slope.

Second hand smoke is annoying. Once you're beyond a 3 to 5 foot range, it isn't any more dangerous than the auto emission filled air we normally breathe. The actual danger tends to be greatly overstated. That said, as a smoker I don't have any desire to annoy others and have no problem not smoking in enclosed public places. I remember when people smoked in airplanes, hospitals and supermarkets. It was not a good thing.

As a non-smoker, I really don't understand why people smoke in the first place. I have friends that have told me that they had self esteem issues when they were young and smoked so that they would be perceived as cool. I have other friends that smoke but they never completed high school so they aren't very bright. I asked my great grandmother why she smoked and she said when she was young, no one knew that smoking was as dangerous as it is and that the warnings didn't come out until the mid-fifties. I think most of the people that were unaware of the overstated dangers are dead by now. My great grandma is still alive but she lives in an iron lung. On the other hand, I completely understand why people grill and why they drive cars.

I'm not surprised.

While I understand there has been talk for quite some time that there could be new smoking restrictions in Jamaica, this new "edict" seemed (to me, anyways) a little too rushed and open to interpretation. And as such, practically impossible to enforce.

It will be interesting to see what types of adjustments will be made. I'm also wondering if we get to see an actual law clearly defined and spelled out, rather than the vague quotes from officials we've been seeing in the news.

the rule will be "adjusted" to suit the needs of each location, it is way too vague to "blanket" everybody/everyplace.........
