Re: The Number Five - A Trip Report
Made it back from our morning adventure just in time for a likkle rain. Actually a lot of rain. Almost deafening. Puddling in the sidewalks already. I love the rain, especially on the island. It's here just in time to cool us down. Hot and steamy soon come. While its raining, let's take a look back at yesterday's unexpected turn of events.
The pool seemed like a good place to be as it got a little warmer outside so we put on our suits and to the water we went. We had been there long enough to empty a few Stripe bottles and have a few hardy laughs when the young man that was signing at breakfast showed up. SharkHunter and I were both in the water and the kid, soon to be known as King so we'll call him K Man for this report, picked up the beach ball and motioned to toss it to us. We batted it around a bit between the three of us, him on the pool deck and us in the water. I'm not very good, so he was doing more running than anything. Eventually he tells us he's going to go put on his swim trunks so a moment later he's back in the water with us. He stays at the shallow end. We can tell he's not very comfortable in the water but are having lots of fun batting the ball back and forth and laughing. Eventually I feel my skin getting a little over baked so I exit stage left and claim a lounge chair while the guys continue their sport in the pool. At some point the ball game turned in to swim lessons. The K Man couldn't ask for a much better teacher than SharkHunter. It doesn't take long for the kid to show confidence although he still has his moments of temporary panic in the deeper waters. He almost mastered floating on his back but he still needs to practice the relaxation technique. He's a good kid. Funny. After the swim lessons and a little raft lounging for the guys, I go down to our room, grab juice and snacks for the three of us and we all enjoy a refreshment after the tiring swim. We use a notepad on our phones to talk back and forth. He's from Kingston on a before school holiday. After a while we went back to our patio to chat more after we all went separate ways to find dry clothes. We met his mom while he asked if he could visit on out patio with us. Nice lady. We gave him an imported souvenir. We brought with us some crystals we personally dug a few hours from home at a place called the Great Salt Plains. Not highly valuable or anything but they're found no where else in the world and they have a unique hourglass shape of sand hardened in the glass-like crystal. A little piece of our home as a likkle thanks for sharing their homes for those we make memories with on this trip. We give the kid one and our little homemade postcard with the photos of the place and the explanation of what it is. He says (writes) that he wants to give us a gift. We told him his friendship was a gift and we are having a good time. Visited the day away. Many laughs. I use my phone to look up different signs. Since our daughter was born I've been teaching her what little I knew of sign language and learning with her as we went. I realize now the words I taught her were neat - tree, ball, car - but not at all useful in conversation. Thank goodness for phones and wi-fi. I look up lots of words and with pen and paper we all enjoy a fun and memorable exchange and learn a little about each other along the way.
We break in time for dinner but sunset isn't far away so we don't want to go to far. A stop at Momma Flo's seems in order. Our first time visiting although I've intended to for years. I remember reading about her place the first time I visited N.com several years ago and always meant to stop by. Frequent and prolonged cases of hammock gravity had prevented it in the past but not this time. The place was deserted but a kind young lady came out and greeted us. We asked if they were serving dinner tonight. All the chairs were leaned up against the table and no places set. She assured us they were and went around to the kitchen. Momma Flo came out, looked us over and gave a deep glance into my eyes and proceeded to give us the most welcoming of hugs, like we were long awaited visitors, family, a hug that reminded me of my grandmas's when I was a child. Our first sunset dinner starting out like this. This was going to be good!
