International Coastal Cleanup - from the Jamaican Environment Trust...
"Each year in September, hundreds of thousands of volunteers comb lakes, rivers, and beaches around the world for litter. These volunteers are the driving force behind International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day. Last year, 561,000 volunteers removed 10 million pounds of trash from the coastlines and waterways around the world. Just over 4,000 of those volunteers were Jamaicans who removed nearly 50,000 pounds of trash from our beaches. These dedicated volunteers collect data about sources and types of trash harming our oceans and waterways. The data is used to raise awareness, inspire recycling efforts and shape policy decisions from the local to international level.
The Ocean Conservancy supports ICC on a global scale. In Jamaica, the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and the RBC Blue Water Project will partner with the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) to organize the islandwide beach cleanup on September 21st, 2013.
JET is National Coordinator of ICC in Jamaica, and we also host the flagship ICC beach cleanup event at Fort Rocky on the Palisadoes strip. Over 1600 volunteers, including 21 Corporate Teams, turned out last year, making JET's beach cleanup the largest one on the island. A total of three miles of the Fort Rocky Beach on the Palisadoes Strip in Kingston was cleaned. Over 4000 pounds of trash was collected, which included over 6,200 plastic bottles – the largest category of debris at that site."
These volunteers ROCK!
Great job Gail and thank you for the info Lisa. I'd never heard of this prior to reading about it here and it sounds like a great event at which to volunteer.
Don't waste your time with explanations, people only hear what they want to hear.
Gail you are amazing! My husband and I are looking so forward to seeing and talking with you next April (if you are on property).
