We generally do not eat a lot of beef while on the island. It's always been good --if very lean-- every time I've had it however. As far as goat, on our first trip to the island, we went horseback riding... My wife's topped to take a picture of a goat in someone's front yard... The guide said "you just photographed their Christmas dinner". The look on my wife's face was priceless.

It does taste a little different, and I had to get used to it before I appreciated it. Couple reasons it tastes different, it's a different breed of cattle than most of us are used to. Most of their beef is the Red Poll, a breed that does well in their climate (I think it was first introduced from New Zealand). Another reason it tastes different, it grazes on Jamaican flora ... different than the grain-fed, or range-fed beef we're used to (you don't see too many bales of hay in Jamaica). It's diet is what gives it its 'gamey' flavor. It's also more lean than most the beef we're used to .... the cows just don't get as fat as the ones here in N. America. In general, their beef is probably more wholesome, healthy, & safe than ours in the States (as long as it's cooked sufficiently). I recommend you try it if you haven't.
We've never been to The Caribbean, only Mexico so I'm excited about tasting new foods. I WILL be adventurous!!! (maybe not so much with mushrooms though...I hear they're "different" in Jamaica??)
