Wow! It's so interesting to see what others have taken back with them from Negril...From Riu beach towels to balls of hash (LOL!)...test tubes filled with sand.. paintings... carvings... bamboo rings...Tree seed pods...banana knives..Jah Cure's t-shirt (that's really cool!)..

Rambo – I love the pictures and story of the “Little Green Island Crab girl” - There's a little boy we met at a fruit stand on the way to Negril. He left an impression on us and his story touched our hearts. We're planning on hiring the same driver for our next trip so we can hopefully visit him again with another small gift. It would be incredible to see him grow up over the years into a young man.

LuvinNegril – It's so cool that you also have a Courtney carving! I know what you mean about Pets destroying your stuff. My cats chewed on my doctor bird carving then they dragged it into the litter box and pissed on it!I was none too pleased. That's a beautiful turtle despite your dog having had his way with it.

Michele – Those are beautiful Karl Ricketts paintings. I think there was a painting by this artist in the room we stayed at in CCLP. It was so similar in painting style.. A few other people mentioned their Karl Ricketts painting, where does he sell them in Negril, How do you get one?

Lorax2 – beautiful bird tree. I'm always amazed at what can be carved out of wood. It's such an unforgiving medium to work with. Once you cut off that piece of wood from the sculpture it can't be put back on. It takes so much artistic skill.

Sweetness – that's funny that we have the same doctor bird carving! We keep ours in a high up place too because we have to keep it away from the cats... (see above reason) I agree that the most treasured mementos are always gifts from others. I think I treasure the butterfly carving so much because Markus bought it for me as a gift.

Chet&Coleen - The village carving is so intricately detailed and crafted with care. Really gorgeous work. I like the bob Marley birthday bash poster too. I've been listening to so much Bob marley lately and I'm going to a Wailers concert here in SF next thursday.

And Yes,some of the best mementos are simply the memories that you share with your friends when you get back and hold close to your heart.

Thanks so much everyone for sharing your memento pictures and stories.

My Karl Ricketts. We were having a late lunch at LTU and Karl was sitting at the bar with a portfolio of his work. We immediately chose a painting of the cliffs with cottages.

The most treasured memento of Negril that we brought back was a HUGE hug from Theresa @ Jus Natural on the West End. What a beautiful human she is!

The only other souvenir we brought back was a small vial of sand from the beach, to add to our collection of tropical paradise getaways.

The photos and memories will feed my soul for a while, but I return weekly in my mind. I can hear the surf in my ears as I was snorkeling @ Negril Escape, I feel the shiver of excitement when I spotted that darned eel in the water. . . Holy Carp! ;} and the complete calm as I hoovered above the fish and coral on the cliffs and observed the world under that gorgeous turquoise ocean. (I still did not find my seahorse. )
The sunsets and new days to explore the neighborhood were such a treat....Kevin, the boyz at the John Holt concert ..... I have to say, the spirits of the people of Jamaica were my favorite treasures to bring home with us. <3
Hoping we can one day return and make even more treasured memories..... and friendships. I can still smell it, after six months!

I treasure all of my carvings. Other favorites are a handmade Jamaican doll that I got on my first trip in 1994 from a nice lady at the craft market and a set of Red Stripe salt and pepper shakers that we have been using regularly for many years. Also love all my sarongs that I have bought over the years. Love wearing them around the house in the summertime, so comfortable.

I love my beaded anklet and necklaces in black, red yellow and green. I have worn my anklet since my trip in May--I will wear it till it falls off. Scotch bonnet hot sauce is a fave--I am down to one bottle. Blue Mountain coffee, yum. I have about 7 paintings of varying sizes--one a self portrait of my ex bf. 3 I still need to get framed, 4 are stretched on wood frames and hung. I have a couple nice JA sundresses I got there and some sarongs. I still have a little bit of a tan from Ja. I am pretty much done getting paintings or carvings--now when I go it is mainly perishables or beaded rasta colored jewelry that I get. Sometimes I don't get anything. I don't have room for anything else in my teeny apartment.
