Booger, I took your advice in the past and unlocked an old Blackberry that I had lying around the house. I got on the at&t support chat on their website, and they walked me through the unlocking process. It took a little work but it was relatively painless. Then, when we arrived in Negril I stopped at the Digicel store and picked up a sim card and 1000 (international) minutes for about $20. The nice lady at the store installed it for me and made sure everything was working. No problem! Worked like a charm.
However, once we arrived home we kept getting calls and texts from a Jamaican woman. Now, my wife is suspicious about all those trips I made to DJ's Market.I told that her that if the texts were really intended for me they wouldn't be written in patois.
