I check my e-mail daily when I'm in Negril, and Skype my kids (young adults) frequently in the evening from my room. But I will not carry a phone around when I'm there. I walk the beach wearing sunglasses, shorts, a hat and some J$ stuffed in my pocket - no electronic leash - it enhances that delicious feeling of being being free and unfettered. If I want a swim, I just turn right, or left and walk into the water, no worries - all of the bars on the beach accept wet money.
But you gotta do what you gotta do.
