There is a mountain of previous posts on this valid topic. I personally will be getting a complimentary phone from my airport transfer, Kingsley James at Take Care Tours. I have, however, rented in the past. I now understand that you can actually purchase a "throw away" phone for about $1,000 JA ($10.00 US) and that INCLUDES minutes. Its a valid option worth considering. Leave you pricy theft and damage prone phone at home and simply purchase (or rent). Not for everyone but definitely worth serious consideration.

the best carrier for us tourist is Lime.....though the Jamaicans mostly use Digicel....
the international rate and local rate is lower on Lime than Digicel......
but the Jamaicans credits get burned up quick when the call a Lime cellie.....
but the Jamaicans rarely will call you.....cause dem never have credits anyways....ha ha
like dem said.....Lime is $300J's for a Sim Card....think Digicel is $560J's.....big difference
you can buy the phone credits for either company at most any store......
$100, $200, $500 etc are how wi usally buy dem credits....
you can also go online and buy the credits directly thru the carrier......or any service like Ezetop etc

the least expensive retail cellie you can purchase with a sim card is a Lime if they have dem in stock.....
which they didn't have last summer.....though last winter you could buy the setup at Lime for $1,500's.....
that is for the phone and sim card.....every Lime Sim Card comes with 100 minutes......
100 minutes won't last long if you call someone with a Digicel cellie.....
usually the cheapest Digicel cellies you can get at the Negril stores are around $2,500J's.....
so the Lime is a better option for buying......but that's if they have dem in stock......
and it's a cheap cellie that has no camera etc......though it does have a radio.....lol
Jamaicans are big on listening to der cellies radios....ha ha
what a lot people don't know is that the Digicel and Lime stores are franchised stores.....
so it's usually up to the owners what they stock and don't stock.......
on some Fridays is when Lime will blow out der cheap cellies and offer a phone and sim card for $1,250J's including GCT...
hope that wasn't information overload.....lol

Great information Marko. Thanks
Its free to text in Jamaica now through my local carrier so I will be taking my phone. I use the wifi at the resort for anything else. Calls are pretty reasonable but we rarely call we mostly text. We bought a Jamaican Cell phone a couple of years ago but I misplaced the charger sigh.
