Re: Jumped the cliff at Ricks..............

Lacdeloo, if you got a bruise it is because your jump was not as perfect as you thought. I have been diving for years and would rather dive than jump because you actually have more control of your body. If you bruised your bum it is because you did not go in perfectly straight. Even a slight bend at the waist can cause problems. I once jumped from a cenote in Mexico (from a hole in the roof of a cave into water) about 65 feet and bruised my tailbone bad enough that I could barely sit for over a week. The best way to jump is to step off of the platform with you hands to your side and you feet pointed. Last week Janet and I watched people jumping from Rick's for about an hour and saw 3 people who did not land well at all. No one was "hurt" but I'm sure they were black and blue the next day.

    Regards,
    Bob

i agree with bob....it was not a perfect jump.....i have jumped from the tall platform at ricks several trips ago a couple of times....no bruises, no problems at all.....but it is very high.....but i jump at least 30 -50 times each reach from lower platforms at catcha or xtabi, mostly....jumped from the lighthouse at negril escape last april...it is pretty high also....

but i usually spend about 20-30 munites at ricks once a trip, just to people watch...see hundreds of people jump, and there is always a bad landing....

Although I am very sympathetic to the people injured at rick's.......I must say that as adults we should have a bit more of forward thinking about this whole thing......I don't ski and would no more THINK about strapping boards on my feet and hurlilng myself down a hill without training, as I would consider jumping off a cliff ...an activity that I have also never done. Is it not time that we used our brains and take the responsibility for stupid moves instead of blaming the facility, which people were doing on the " injuries at Rick's blog" .We tell our kids not to do dangerous things but think we can???? Just a thought .

If you have a profitable business where you also have at least a few back injuries a year, maybe you could at the least get an emergency backboard. Pulling people out of the water by their arms with a crushed vertebrae is not a good practice. While I agree we are all responsible for are own actions it seems Ricks could be a little more prepared for these type of incidents. Just saying.

What ever happened of personal responsibility? Is it Chevy's fault when you crash your car? I can go on and on and on and on.
if you cannot jump in the water straight with your feet hitting first do not do it........

Ricks Jump story. We were at Country Country March 2002. It was Spring Break and my husband and I in our early 40's,me were the oldest guests at CC.
The Breakers went out on a booze cruise to Ricks. 2 of them decided to jump. When they arrived back at CC, they came to us for help. The young man had hit with his face and had the salt water forced thru his sinus cavities. When he blew his nose, his eyes went black and blue and swelled almost shut! A girl had landed on her butt and was black and blue all week. Those 2 were down for the count and missed out on some of the partying with their friends. My little first aid kit came in handy.

Interesting. I am no stranger to risks while in Negril -- I think I usually call it "pushing limits" -- but jumping Ricks is one thing I have never done. Too darn high. But I have jumped the Cliffs at Xtabi, and I loved it. Some trips I've done it like twenty times, some none at all. I think 50 years old is the cutoff point.
