Thanks Papa Georgie, I'm quite familiar with Barry's Yard and that stretch of beach. Just like the Waldorf-Astoria!
Negril is an authentic Jamaican locale that offers tourist-oriented activities. I live in a "tourist town" in the US that offers tourist activities as well. Most of our tourists don't come in contact too much with the locals, so it's kind of like two different towns in one. I can't afford to shop on my own Main Street; that is tourist land. I will not pay 30US$ and up for a local lobster, but I can barter some fresh veg for lobster with the guy that runs traps. (local economy at work) the tourist experience is far different from the local experience where I live, but no less authentic.

it's a tourist destination if that's all you want . . . like vegas . . . people born live and work for your tourist pleasure --- gotta peek behind the curtain to see OZ - or not . . .
sometimes i take vacations - my recent carnival cruise (party) --- some time i travel (explore and learn)- oh and i love to creep and find out the inner most things and meet dangerous people lol
the more I read your posts the more I like you!!!
kevin- i can see the Vegas not being authentic thing but if you think about it ... it is, just on a super magnified compacted into a desert bowl version. i'm trying to think of a single location that you could call authentic. and i cant... so maybe its all authentic just different because of location, and supply and demand on the area.
Hi Kevin,
My reply was aimed at those who think there is such a thing as "authentic" Jamaica.
After 35 years I still don't know what authentic means.
BTW. You can come visit my yard anytime you're in town
