I wanted to be paid in JA dollars........This changed big time in the mid 70s

I know that you usually get a better rate in bars and restaurants with J. What about taxis, fruit lady and other small itinerant vendors. Are USD or JD preferred?
I'm thinking about changing less USD and carrying more USD in small bills. What do you think?
