I guess I'm cheap. $2 a day is what I usually tip the maid. I've always thought that was reasonable. Maybe I'm wrong.

Our daughter got married last year in Negril and she did not expect gifts from anyone that attended because of the expense of the trip.
We tip the maid $2 per day too.

I tipped housekeeping usually $2/day for 6 nights and then about $5 on the last day.
If you're tipping $2 per day, you're not cheap. I stay for weeks (5-7) every summer & tipping $5 per day would be unreasonable for me. I should add, I also give extra $$$ at the end of my stay for ALL my housekeepers plus bring/leave them items they can use. I also tip the beach staff & adding all the daily tips... really boosts my room rate.
For those of you who tip at the end of your stay, please don't do that. Tip daily. You may not - probably won't - have the same housekeeper every day. You may very well be leaving a big tip for someone who has provided service to you for a day, maybe two. I don't know where this concept came from but it is very inaccurate.
Long ago I worked in housekeeping (one summer while in college) at a resort hotel so I know how hard people work for you. I was actually surprised when I received tips. I was doing my job but it was also of top quality. Once I knew what the deal was, had my relief been collecting my tips, I would have been unhappy. I literally was expected to vacuum walls as well as the carpet in every room I cleaned, clean the bathroom floors w/ a toothbrush. I'm not kidding. I know that's not the way it is in Negril, but I do know the housekeeping staff works hard to do the best for you, their guest.
That all sounds good to me, hope to run across you down there again.
Trip #59 most of February
Good point about room sizes. You might want to tip more for a larger room. I stay in a studio & wash my own dishes, make my own bed, rinse the tub & sinks, even sweep any sand that sneaks in. Housekeeping staff basically empties the trash, changes towels, washes the floor, changes sheets.
Since I know the staff well where I stay, I know that sometimes the big tip at the end can cause friction because of exactly what I described. Not good to put people in that situation, certainly not fair to the person who has done 95% of the work to get 0% of the tip you left for them.
This is a good point. We stay at a small resort, and we know there is only one housekeeper. So at the end of our stay I personally give her a tip for our entire stay. My only concern about leaving a few bucks each day, is that our room gets pretty cluttered and if I leave a couple dollars on a table or nightstand, I'm not sure she would know to take it. I just prefer to personally hand-over the tip for any service.
At large hotels, especially in the States, you will find a "tip envelope" for housekeepers in the room. In this case, I have no problem leaving a daily tip, because they know its for them. Also, we will often put up the "DO NOT DISTURB" sign, and if we sleep in too late the housekeeper may never come. If this is the case, they won't get their daily tip. However, in Negril I don't see these envelopes in the rooms.
I usually tip 2-3 a day and put it on a note that says thank you or something. We have had many housekeepers in JA who never take the money that was left for them if we didn't put it with a note.
I'm there Nov 15 - 26...when are you going? It wont be such a loud rowdy group this time...first part of the trip it's just me and one of the girls from the August trip then the second part of the trip will be my parents. If you get bored come on down to Negril Beach Club....we'll be posted by the lifeguard chair with a red cooler!
