This is just my wild guess/theory...things grow different depending on the elevation and the temp it provides. Seems (to me) like some stuff is ripe months ahead of time in the eastern part of the island way up in the mountains. If you ask the fruit/veggie vendors they will often tell you "they are not ripe here that is why they cost so much cause they come from XYZ". Actually dem nah sa dat, dem sa a ting or to in Patwa dat means dah same....I might be wrong but I'm almost 100% sure I've consumed fresh pears....avocado at least 6 months out of the year without them being imported.
We saw a a few vendors with plenty of pears at the Sav market 2 weeks ago.

NOT-like those itty-bitty ping-pong balls they sell here in-foreign, @ 2 or 3 for US$4.00

Last December, I didn't see a lot in the West End, BUT, there were many up the hill, past Hammonds Bakery, etc. There were many ladies that use to have their produce along the sides of the small road in town. Later, they all moved further up the hill to a nice likkle spot to the right under some trees. Great bunch of ladies BTW!! Once we bought some "pears" she quickly told us that she would be sure and have some there for the rest of our stay. And, of course, she kept her word.
Sorry, but I can't recall what they cost......but they were awesomely good. Even made a batch of guac and found a bag of Tostidos at Wise Choice. Didn't have any calabash bowls or even plastic ones....so, used the half shell of the pear to spoon the guac into. Plan to grab some this trip fi sure.

*ass-suming* you've not *experienced* those Ja-avocados (aka '..pear..'),
then,
you MUST seek-out and try some ---- at least oneone is usually large enough for 2-people
AND,
the kicker is::::>>> they taste soooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooood...!!...
they make a GREAT meal, TOO..!!..try 'em with a likkle slice of China-man cheese, and some water crackers
...ummmmmmm.
.... yummy yummmy
oh
oh.... i gotta warn ya, about one likkle thing-y::::>>> after you try one of those Ja-avocados,,,, and you return to-foreign/home,,,, PLEASE resist the temptation to cuss & slap your local supermarket produce department manager, for those pseudo-avocados he/she been selling.
