Crime threads...advice for a sort of newbie?

Yes. The place we stayed last February, mid beach, had been robbed 4 times in the previous week.

Have fun! Many people have returned after years away, and from what I have read of those who choose to share their experience they say a lot of the vibe is still here even though many things have changed.

Absolutely! Negril is my favorite place in the world! I'll be back next week, and can't wait! The vibe is still certainly there still!

I disagree.

From my perspective as a most of the year resident of Jamaica is that petty crimes often don't get reported whether they be perpetrated on locals or tourists. Frankly I think many instances that do get reported here on N.com are by people who speculate on what may have occurred to someone else or heresay accounts of what they heard. Most of the time (I believe but I might be wrong) the actual victims don't relate their first-hand accounts of the crime. The majority of the deletions are from those speculation threads because they are just unfounded or unsubstantiated rumors or "suss" and that misinformation only makes the actual truth harder to discern.

Rob and Lisa (I am sure) hear many different accounts of these incidents from all sides. Rob tries to set the record straight when he believes he knows the true account of the incident when a rumor mill thread begins to be hashed and re-hashed to a point that the truth no longer resembles what actually happened.

Above all you have to take into account that N.com exists to promote tourism to Negril and to Jamaica as a whole. You want the news then you have to check the Gleaner or the Observer, watch TV or listen to the radio.

Just my personal observation.

Hey what do think about first responders to accidents in Negril ? It was a shocking emergency response to the accident at the resort on tuesday 28th. Maybe a life could have been saved if we had a hospital in Negril. It has been 3 years now in the making but the powers that be will NOT sign off on the land for lease/sale. It belongs to the people but controlled by UDC ,it is just beyound the bridge pass the new development and RIU going towards MoBay. Each time we meet with them criteria has to be fullfilled within certain dates, but when that is done they keep moving the goal post. There must be a reason why they do not want this hospital which will be so,so good for the island and the people in Negril.
Come on people get behind this project and show what people power can do please !!!!

Since you know about the 4 robberies that happened the previous week last February and you see no help in sugar coating things, why are you not mentioning the name of the property in question and offering details of the robberies so that others may benefit from this information?

And if you notice, this is being reported here right now, so to say it is not reported only comes down to the fact that you didnt report it in the first place.

Please present the details about the robberies so others may benefit in the future. If you are certain it happened just as you heard it did, then others can be helped.

But please do not blame us for you not reporting something that you know, that cannot be our fault.

Hear, Hear! Negril.com as well as me and Lisa have been behind this project since day one! Perhaps some of the folks spending so much time discussing me and Lisa's personal life and on rumor and speculation about events they know very little if anything about actually DID something to help, we may be further along than we are now. The waste of their potentially valuable time is shameful.

Why doesnt everyone take time out today to contact the NIH http://www.negrilinternationalwellnessfoundation.org/ and ask who they can write to to get this project sped up. You can also donate to the cause - become part of the solution, not part of the problem!

I posted here because I haven't been to Negril in 20 years and based on some previous posts, I just wanted to get a sense of how things are now in comparison to 2 decades ago. In case I didn't mention, I had travellers checks taken 23 years ago in Negril...I got too comfortable and left things unlocked.

In the 80s, while I didn't stay at the beach, we walked aboout town and on the beach and I never felt unsafe. I'm assuming that I will see a lot of changes in that respect---no Margaritavilles, only 2 AIs back then and more undeveloped beach property. And while there were hustlers around, it sounds like that has increased as well.

I found this site after I booked my tickets a few weeks ago. I must say had I seen it before with all the posts about how bad things are I might have thought twice. But I also believe that Jamaica is a place you either hate or love....and if you love it, it is forever in your blood! I have thought of Negril, Bird Mountain, the hills so many times over the past 20 years. While I am only iin my early 40s, I feel the need to go back, at least once more, in my lifetime.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to share their thoughts about the dos and dont's....

Can anyone explain the taxi situation? Where to get a taxi, which are safe or approved? And finally, I'm still deciding on how to go about money---bring cash, debit cards or those ancient things known as travellers checks?

i have never had any problems in negril day or night.been goin there for years.i am not afraid of a couple of punks thinkin they are gonna rob me!!!they better have guns and know how to use them!!!

Cars with red license plates are properly insured and licensed to carry passengers.

A "Route" cab takes as many passengers as they can fit in the car. Rate is 1.25 US per leg. In Negril one leg is the beach and the other is the cliffs (West End)

A private cab costs more (about 1.5 times) but it's a lot more comfortable and once you find a driver you can call him pretty much any time
