Juls, I don't know what your definition of "old" is, but I can tell you that I made a lovely new boardie friend this last trip, who brought her elderly mother with her and she said that the locals treated her SO so good! I think you will have a wonderful experience. Will this be your first time?

Indecision may or may not be my problem
I did notice also that the vibe was different when we brought our daughter along, who was ten at the time. Nobody approached us to buy "stuff", the vendors were less aggressive, and people were friendlier....if that is possible! It was refreshing. Of course, we didn't do the 'adult' stuff with her. It was a very nice trip and needless to say she is always wanting to go back.

I'm coming down there in Mid Feb. I'm originally from NYC, and have traveled pretty extensively around the world. Never really felt that I had to have my "A" Game on anywhere I went, but have to admit to feeling apprehensive about coming to Negril. Been to Jamaica several times - from cruise ships and once to an AI in Montego Bay. My wife and I have always enjoyed "going native" as it were wherever we have traveled which is why she selected this trip.
I however just want to go someplace and chill - NOT have to keep looking over my shoulder and wonder who is going to rip me off etc. THAT isn't vacation. Too late - we are coming. I hope this vacation is not a referendum on my ever coming to Jamaica again and I hope I don't have to bring my "A" game as my "A" game comes complete with 24 years a veteran in the Army. Wanted to leave that particular "A" game in the past forever...
Mi Lady and I have not had a negative incident happen to us in over 20 visits since 1991. We've done some stupid things - too much to drink mostly - but nothing bad has ever befallen us. We don't go looking for trouble and so far trouble has not found us.
We don't smoke dope, shoot heroin, snort crack, walk the beach alone at night, walk the road very far at night, take route taxis, trust anyone we just met. We have a travel safe, lock our doors, don't leave anything of value out in the open in our room, don't walk around with a wad of cash, do not wear expensive jewelry (which we don't much at home either), don't tell anyone we don't know where we are staying or that we just got in or how long we'll be there. We are polite to the vendors, do business with those we like and trust with a polite "no" to those we don't. We "Respect"!
We have lots of fun, gets lots of sun, drink lots of Red Stripe, have lots of meaningless conversations with numerous others having meaningless conversations, have made lots of friends along the way who we can trust and with whom we can have a few laughs, give back what we can to help the poor and kids of Negril, and return home safe and sound with many more memories to help us through until the next reach.
I don't know yet whether I want to live in Negril full time as Rob and lots of others have; but I never ever feel reluctant about returning to enjoy our little piece of paradise in Negril as often as we can afford it.
