    Local (Non-Tourist) Apt Rentals?

I am helping a friend in Negril find a one bedroom or studio apartment to rent. He currently lives on the West End but the owner of the property and the other tenant are in a bitter dispute and he just wants to move. He's single, has a good, steady job in Negril and one older dog that can live outside. I'm in the US so all the search results are for vacation rentals. Is there a Jamaican equivalent of Craigslist? Or even somewhere in person he can go to look at listings? He has lived in the same place for a long time so he's out of the loop for apartment hunting and crazy busy with tourist season at his job.

If any of you know of somewhere with vacancies for a reasonable rent, let me know! He's a private person so I don't think renting a room would be good for him.

If he's Jamaican...he knows the best way to find a place in Negril is to ask the people he works with...also the large grocery stores in town have bulletin boards....

Yeah, asking around hasn't turned up anything so far. He mentioned that he's going to check the stores and shops so hopefully that will have some leads. I'm worried he won't find anything this time of year. He is also trying not to make a big fuss about moving because he doesn't like people in his business which makes asking around hard!

After being here 20+ years. busy season is the worst time to try and find a bargain for long term accommodations. But if he is willing to sign a year (or more lease), then his options are much more widely available. And since there is only about 5000 people living in Negril, it is nearly impossible to be "out of the loop". I dont even know what that suggestion means....

    Good luck!

One has to be careful not to become a "white angel". I think that Rob is trying to give you a hint. As a Jamaican, your friend is not likely to be"out of the loop" and is fully aware of the rental possibilities in the area. I can hardly imagine a place where the people could be more savvy when it comes to finding the "best deal". I have been visiting the island for extended stays since 1976 and I still occasionally "go soft" and fall for a friends supposed need for a likkle something. My Jamaican friends in the US have the same requests by their on island friends and relatives by phone and when they return to Jamaica for visits.

If you all need to know, I've been a "white angel" before. And much harder, deeper, and arduously than any article online will detail. I did it, I took good things away from the experience and also learned many, many lessons. I'd say there were bad things but I don't look at it that way. He hasn't asked for this inquiry--I chose to help him since he commented that his circle of friends and family hadn't turned up any leads for him because tourist season is a bad time to be looking for a long term rental. I used to check out this board years ago and remember it being helpful.

By "out of the loop" I mean that my friend works 12 hours a day and goes home to enjoy peace and quiet. He rarely hangs out at the shops or bars and doesn't linger around the streets chatting. Nor has he moved from place to place in a long time. So I suppose I could have just said that but I wanted to be a little more polite about it.

Anyways, I appreciate the private messages that actually answered my question rather than try to inform me about White/Jamaican relationships. He has a few options to choose from now, so this will probably be my last reply. Thanks.
