    Re: Harassment

On my last reach in May I felt the beach vendors weren't as bad as in the past. But I do think its probably that after a dozen or so trips I've changed my demeanor when I walk the beach. Not necessarily on purpose ,but I just no longer have that wide eyed look.. lol... kind of a no thanks keep walking thing now.
And... I really wish people would stop generalizing about people who choose to stay AI. I've probably spent almost as much time non ai as i have at my ai of choice..Couples Swept Away.I will continue to do a split stay non ai on cliffs or beach and CSA .But..if i had to choose one.. or if budget allowed.. I would choose to spend my precious VACATION time at Swept Away. Not because I"m lazy but because of all the dozen of places I"ve stayed in Negril it provides the best VACATION for my husband and I.

I think it depends where you stay because some resorts allow people to constantly "bother" you. I was talking to a couple at the airport that has been going to Negril for twelve years, and they said they were bothered so much that it would be their last trip. When you walk down the beach people are always asking you to buy things, and if you are asked all day while on the beach it can become too much.

Haven't had a problem in years. No one bothers with us, except the rum heads on the West End Road.

I like to harass the higglers myself, last trip the first one that saw me asked if it was my first time. I actually recognized the guy so I started yelling at him for not remembering me. Worked well. Another guy who hangs by our hotel kept harassing me to buy drugs from him, so every time I saw him, I kept saying, "hey, have you seen xxx?", which is his name. Throws them off guard and gets a good laugh.

Whenever I see the word "harassment" in connection with Jamaica, my first question is, where does one draw the line between people trying to sell you stuff and "harassment"? I think first-time visitors draw it in a different place from regulars. In three trips to Jamaica (all in non-AIs, and having plenty of contact with local residents), I've been approached dozens (hundreds?) of times to buy goods or services, but I'm not sure I have ever been "harassed." I have seen stories of beggars/higglers occasionally getting nasty and abusive, but fortunately have not experienced this myself.

This is what works for me .... When they ask me my name, I reply Ivanhoe Rygin. It always ends up with a "Respect Mon" and a smile.
