Sweetness,smiles are the best thing anyone can give,if everyone smiled as much as we do life would be so much better for everyone ;>}
I NEVER give out that info.....Lots of reasons they are asking and not necessarily positive...always better to be low key in Jam...dont tell your coming/goings and for goodness sake dont be giving out your phone number# to people you've just met or only know for a few days/weeks..etc..Take there # if you think you need it...( i've seen/heard this done by many visitors-many with negative consequences in the end)
I mean serious, why do they need to know this info or why do they care where your staying and when your leaving???

And yes, some may just be starting a innocent,friendly conversation, I realize that...But if its someone i dont know real well..Then no, i wont give out that info and will change the topic and start a new friendly conversation-their are other "ice-breakers" out there...

SG...that would just be common sense....don't give out your personal information anywhere unless necessary.
This whole advice about people not knowing your comings & goings I find to be quite weak & needlessly creating a paranoid atmosphere.
The flip side of this, is that it's often better that you let people know where you're going so that if something is out of the ordinary, they know where you should have been & when you're likely to return. Security guards will often ask just for this reason...nothing wrong with letting the front desk know either.
The number of times people are asked where they're staying during busy season I'm sure is in the thousands per day...and still everyone knows Negril has a very low incident of tourist crimes.
I agree with RockRobster...if someone really wants to know something, anywhere, it's not impossible to find out.
Again...common sense rules!

Thanks for that Bnewb. We can easily remove the reference to Negril in this conversation. Its universal. Common sense.
Common Sense= I know what it is.....My posting was my viewpoint-nothing more or less..If you dont agree with it or see it some other way(weak,breeding paranoia,etc), thats cool with me.I respect our difference of opinions..I'm not going to criticize your viewpoint or opinion...I just see it differently..To each his own..
(I will say that living out in the country in Jam-some things run differently than in Negril -it is not "universal"...)

so were ARE you staying, suzen????

The question here has to do with being in Negril as a tourist not living in "country"....no one has asked about that here...I think you may be confusing the two.
For tourists visiting Negril & suggesting that people not tell their comings & goings can be harmful advice.
A visitor to Negril has no reason to act differently than they would visiting any other place. This is what Dash was referring to as universal...it's the same everywhere & common sense applies.
