They have to activate it? So based on this info I can't have someone purchase a sim card in Jamaica and mail it to me so my phone will work upon arrival?

Can a sim card be activated in someone elses Razr at the Lime store and then mailed to me and then installed in my Razr? Not sure if this will work.....

The SIM has to be activated at the POS in JA. The purchaser will have to provide either JA ID or a Passport. It doesn't matter what phone, if any, the SIM is activated in, it will work in any GSM phone that is unlocked. The SIM doesn't know whose phone it is in....

However, once you land in JA, your phone will send info to the SIM's carrier as to exactly what type of phone the SIM is in...not that it should matter a whit....

There really is no reason someone else cant purchase & activate a Sim card for their identical phone and mail it to me. When I land it should work fine ;-)

The phone doesn't have to be identical...in fact...they may have a SIM reader that can activate the SIM without any phone at all...

So Assuming someone is coming on the 25th of December where could someone buy a sim card in advance of their trip? Im assuming everything will be closed on the 25th and 26th, so what would you do? Using ATT is out of the question $$$$$
Also where would one go for J's if someone was arriving on the 25th?
Is this person S___ed until the 27th?

Bea, I don't think you can get a SIM card sent to you by the carrier, but you might want to send an email to LIME and Digi to confirm...JA has gotten strict about the ID thing...5 years ago I bought a phone from Claro in Negril and they just asked for my name and address, no ID. I think your are SOL on the 25th for a phone or SIM...

As to $$, just use an ATM. They work on the 25th and 26th, until they run out of $$!! We got JMD last 26th at the ScotiaBank ATM at the roundabout...there was money, but the litter of receipts on the floor of the booth was an inch thick!!

Or, just spend USD. It is universally accepted in Negril...and you will get JA back in change!!

The stores will be closed on the 25th & 26th. That is my dilemma. I arrive the 25th. I've tried to communicate with Lime through email and all I get is canned responses. Not likely they will send anything in the mail.

This is why I am having someone get a sim card for me in advance. Maybe you can have a friend who arrives prior to you help you by doing the same.

If you cannot get someone to buy a sim & mail it to you before your trip, inquire at your hotel or with your airport transport - either one of them may have cell phones to rent. Or bring a laptop and only do chat/email for the first two days. Another option is International Texting on your AT&T phone. Not as good as talking but still much cheaper. I have Verizon and I think it is 50 cents to send and 25 cents to receive. Contact your cell phone carrier so you will know exactly what the costs of calls/texts will be.

Lastly, but most importantly - DON"T STRESS! That defeats the purpose of your trip in the first place. It will be fine. It will all work out.

Funny how when we travel to get away from it all, we work so hard at trying to take it all with us.
